Job Description

Summary:
The Optometric Technician performs patient histories, completes requested ophthalmic testing and is responsible for ensuring the proper utilization of time and movement of the patient throughout their visit.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Two Years of Optometric Experience (Preferred by not required)

- Ability to learn complete knowledge of all forms that are used within the clinic
- Ability to learn the anatomy and physiology of the eye
- Must be self-directed, highly motivated, able to multi-task and work under pressure in a fast paced clinic
- Ability to learn working knowledge of all ophthalmic terminology, spelling and pronunciation of same
- Must have reliable transportation and be able to travel to various satellite locations as needed for work assignments

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Greet and walk patients to exam or testing rooms
- Consistently perform proper documentation of case history, confrontation visual fields, pupil evaluation, screening extra-ocular muscle function, visual acuity, assessment of angle depth, instillation of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents, amsler grid, and other functions as directed by clinical physician
- Obtains eyeglass prescription via lensometer
- Maintains practice confidentiality, follows all legal, HIPAA, and OSHA guidelines
- Performs patient testing accurately and effectively as directed by the clinical provider(s): i.e. Slit Lamp Exam, PAMS, Visual Fields, Color Test, Tonometry, OCTs, Fundus Photos, etc.
- Effectively communicates physician instructions to patients and documents accordingly
- Ensures scheduling template is being followed correctly
- Assists the physician with pharmacy calls, patient calls, etc.
- Ensures the patient lanes are clean and well-stocked at the end of each day with equipment turned off and properly covered
- Completes tech station duties daily: Including listening to patient voicemails and returning same day
- If assigned to an ophthalmologist: must be able to refract with a +/- .50 diopters
- If assigned to a retina physician: must be able to assist with intraocular injections as needed

- Assumes other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- The majority of the time on-the-job is spent sitting and walking
- At times, the job may require some lifting up to 50 pounds
- This job requires the following types of vision: close, distance, peripheral and depth perception
- Must be able to communicate clearly in person and over the telephone
- Hearing must be adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone
- Typical noise level for the work environment of this job is moderate (i.e. clinical office with phones, computers, printers, testing equipment, patient waiting areas)

Schedule:
- Monday to Friday
- One late night a week
- Possible one Saturday a month, based on location (advance notice will be provided)
- Must be able to attend one monthly meeting before or after normal business hours (advance notice will be provided)
- Must be able to attend one monthly training event before or after normal business hours or on a Saturday (advance notice will be provided)

Job Type: Full-Time

Expected Hours: 40 per week
