Job Description

The supervisor role is one where the individual must have an excellent grasp of the work of the team and an understanding of the tasks and activities of a manager. The supervisor is often drawn from the working team because management appreciates his or her work ethic, company attitude, and commitment to quality.

Supervises employees involved in loading and unloading materials, checking invoices, pulling stock, operating material handling equipment, and other warehouse and delivery duties. Maintains shipping records. Maintains an inventory of stock on hand of both short-term storage and that which is replenished as needed.

Functions of a Supervisor:

A supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day performance of a small group. It may be a team, a department or a shift. Typically, the supervisor has experience in what the group does and has earned the position based on management's belief that he/she is capable of guiding the team.

Common supervisory tasks include:

  1. Helping the team understand performance targets and goals.
  2. Training or ensuring that workers are properly trained for their specific roles.
  3. Scheduling work hours and shifts.
  4. Coordinating job rotation and cross-training.
  5. Providing real-time feedback on worker performance.
  6. Sharing company updates, financial results and new objectives with team members.
  7. Assisting in resolving emergencies. For example, a quality or a customer problem may be escalated to the team supervisor for handling.
  8. Identifying and resolving workplace problems, including tardiness or absenteeism.
  9. Providing reports and activity updates to management.
  10. Assisting in hiring and terminations activities, although supervisor requires managerial approval of all new hires or terminations.

Shipping and Packaging supervisor tacks includes:

  1. Verifying shipment documents
  2. Determining shipping priorities
  3. Developing shipping and packaging procedures
  4. Determining storage space requirements
  5. Loading and unloading materials and operating material handling equipment

  1. Inspecting loading operations.
  2. Updating shipping records.
  3. Managing the inter-departmental transport of materials
  4. Managing shipping orders and invoices
  5. Inventory reconciliation
  6. Suggest improvements to processes.
  7. Be a knowledge resource for other team members.
  8. Manage continuous improvement projects related to logistics and internal material flow.
  9. Ensuring the accuracy of the measurement of items being shipped.
  10. Complying with carrier limits and specifications to avoid overcharging.
  11. Confirming and recording the receipt of shipments
  12. Preparing and packing items for shipping
  13. Maintain Shipping records and an inventory of stock on hand.
  14. Collaborating and communicating with logistics technicians, customer service representatives, and service providers
  15. Performing other duties assigned by the Director of Purchasing
