Job Description

The Community Service Society (CSS) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that has been at the forefront of public policy innovations that support low-income New Yorkers for more than 175 years. Through its Program Services Department, CSS launched a new initiative called the Education Debt Consumer Assistance Program (EDCAP), which is focused on helping consumers navigate their student loan debt. More specifically, EDCAP provides over the phone and in-person assistance to individuals who have higher education debt and need help with various issues. These issues include selecting an appropriate repayment plan, loan consolidation, applying for student loan forgiveness and discharge programs, avoiding or getting out of default, and much more. EDCAP is expanding its services and catchment area and is seeking an intern to support the team and further establish the program’s social media presence.

Job Description:

EDCAP is expanding statewide. This means that it will need to promote program services across New York State to ensure both student loan borrowers and advocates can benefit from the program. EDCAP has also recently launched its first social media accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and is actively cultivating its new follower growth. The intern will gain a deep understanding of nonprofit communications and program services marketing in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. The intern will take on a range of projects that will promote the program, connect borrowers with necessary assistance, and get the word out about important student loan system updates. The intern will also have the opportunity to learn about promising work being done by our network of nonprofit partners collaborating together to help tackle to the student debt crisis.

The work of the intern will include:

  • Maintaining social media presence for EDCAP’s social media accounts.
  • Producing social media content for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Maintaining and updating our website presence.
  • Helping plan, develop, and coordinate outreach and communication strategies to promote the program.
  • Producing digital and print marketing materials about the program dissemination to the public.
  • Writing press releases, print, and blogs about our services, the student loan system, and our client success stories.
  • Conducting research related to marketing and communications.

Job Requirements:

  • Applicants must be enrolled full or part time in a graduate or undergraduate program in marketing, public relations, communications, journalism, public policy, or closely related field.
  • Proficiency with graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
  • Creative, strategic thinker with excellent written and visual communication skills.
  • Knowledge of social media and online marketing metrics and best practices.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and attentive to quality.
  • Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with web content management systems, social media account administration, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure required.

For immediate consideration, please submit the following: cover letter, resume, and a sample of your work/portfolio.

Salary: The hourly compensation range for this position is $15 to $21. Actual hourly rate will vary depending on factors including but not limited to experience and performance.
