JOB TITLE:           Investment Associate

EMPLOYER:         A-CAP Management LLC

DEPARTMENT:     Special Situations

REPORTS TO:      Portfolio Manager, Special Situations

LOCATION:           Onsite in Miami, FL (Brickell area)

ABOUT THE COMPANY

The A-CAP (www.acap.com) group consists of five life insurance/reinsurance companies/captives, an asset manager and various other non-insurance companies. The asset manager primarily invests in structured securities including CLOs, CMBS, ABS and collateralized lending, direct real estate lending, private credit, and equity for both internal and external clients. A-CAP’s management team and operational professionals have diverse experience and proven success across the insurance, reinsurance, and investment sectors with an average of 20 years of experience. Assets under management are approximately $10 billion and growing at over $500 million, annually. A-CAP’s offices are in New York, Salt Lake City, and Miami.

A-CAP Management “ACM” is the asset management arm of A-CAP. ACM formally launched in April 2014 as an SEC registered investment advisor. ACM aims to provide a cost-effective way for small to mid-size insurance companies to rapidly gain exposure to less liquid and new asset classes that are generally outside the scope of traditional insurance company asset managers. Our overriding goal is to positively impact an insurance company’s financial position and support their long-term stability and growth through:

  • Maintaining credit quality and matching asset liability profiles
  • Strengthening the insurance company balance sheet
  • Maintaining or improving return on capital
  • Supporting long term stability and growth with acute sensitivity to insurance regulatory, accounting, and capital issues
  • Spreading cost-of-team across other similarly situated insurance companies

ABOUT THE ROLE
A-CAP is seeking an experienced Investment Associate to manage analytic and modeling work for the Special Situations team. The Investment Associate will work on investment memos, enhance the team’s reporting capability and asset management (I.E. build out and standardize investment review); and build out quarterly valuation of key assets. In the long term, the Investment Associate will lead asset management for small investments, develop new investing opportunities or ideas, and support various workout efforts directly with borrowers.

A-CAP’s Special Situations team provides financing solutions to event driven, esoteric or underserved invested portions of the market. The team is generally agnostic to duration for investments, but often underwrites to bridge lending situations where capital investment can help unlock longer term value. The team also looks for assets with misunderstood collateral which can be leveraged. The team has a hands-on and high touch approach with borrowers and management teams. The team has an operational approach, isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty, and often expects to assist management in driving best outcomes. The group is generalist by nature with investments across asset classes and sectors. The team currently has investments in Media, Entertainment, Financial Institutions, Football, Real Estate, Aviation, Consumer, CLO, ABS, etc.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
  • Underwriting investments, drafting investment memos, and presenting to Investment Committee.
  • Assist in managing and strengthening client relationships and JV partners relationships.
  • Creating presentation materials for capital raising, regulatory, and marketing purposes.
  • Training, managing, and growing junior team members.
  • Assisting junior team members with workflows between front office and operational team for A-CAP and clients.
  • Monitoring investments and maintaining thorough knowledge of various investments in the portfolio.
  • Developing a database and quarterly reports for special situations investments and portfolios.
  • Assist in originating and syndicating private credit investments.
  • Managing the rating process for applicable investments.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
  • 3-5 years of experience in private credit, restructuring, private equity, leveraged finance, investment banking, and/or similar roles. Candidates with understanding of restructuring and prior workout experience are preferred.
  • Experience training, growing, and managing junior staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Financial modeling including but not limited to 3-statement, DCFs, 13-week cash flows, and ABS cash flow modeling.
  • Team player with a strong desire for personal growth in a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment.
  • Ability to frame, ask, and investigate questions independently.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to work independently and multi-task in a complex and fast-paced environment.
  • Formal credit or investment training is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
