Job Description

Position Summary:

The Director of Finance is a key member of the School’s administrative team and, in collaboration with the Head of School and Finance Committee, is responsible for developing and monitoring all aspects of the school’s budget. The Director of Finance is responsible for the School’s finances, and compliance.

     Immediate Supervisor: Superintendent

     Salary: Commensurate with experience.

     FLSA Status: Exempt

     Days Worked: 230 workdays within the contract period.

     Contract Duration: Full-time, annual contract following the school calendar year (August to July)

Core Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the head of school and board to plan, oversee, monitor, and report in all areas related to school financial matters.
  • Anticipate financial problems and opportunities to strengthen the school’s programs and apprise the head of school and finance committee of such problems or opportunities.
  • Serve as a key member of the administrative team, finance and buildings and grounds committees of the board. Attend weekly administrative meetings and regular sessions of the board and assigned committees; present information as requested.
  • Attend professional meetings and workshops to keep informed of independent school issues and trends in federal, state, finance and with the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA).
  • Collaborate with the Head of School and Board Finance Committee to develop short- and long-range budgets and sustainable financial models.
  • Provide organization and management for bookkeeping, to ensure sound business practices, and compliance with General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

 

Accounting/Cash Management:

  • Oversee the annual audit, IRS 990 Tax Return, benefit reporting return and other government filings required.
  • Review weekly batch of invoices for payment; ascertain proper approval and account coding; review and sign corresponding checks.
  • Review and reconcile investment account activity quarterly. Calculate the draw from investment accounts and book corresponding journal entries. Ascertain that asset allocation in investment accounts is consistent with policy and work with the Finance Committee to make adjustments where necessary.

 

After-School and Summer Programs

  • Review summer and after-school programs, recommend ideas for increased revenue generation, and suggest ways to reduce costs while maintaining program quality.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration with major in Accounting or Finance from an accredited university/college.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of financial management and administration within an educational institution.
  • Proven track record in developing accurate, timely, and effective financial reports.
  • Proficiency in identifying and implementing appropriate technological solutions to enhance job functions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, effectively delegate tasks, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Proven experience in managing and interacting with diverse personalities with tact and diplomacy.
  • Strong communication skills encompassing speaking, writing, and active listening.
  • 2-3 years of experience managing staff.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with a proven ability to foster credibility, trust, and respect across all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency in Excel, including formulas, functions, pivot tables, charts, and graphs.
  • Hands-on experience with Finance ERPs.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA and/or MBA credentials with concentration in accounting or finance.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a Controller within a nonprofit educational setting.
  • Proficient usage of the ASCENDER Enterprise System software is a plus.
  • Microsoft 365 knowledge.
