POSITION TITLE: Mechanic

DEPARTMENT: Public Works

SUPERVISOR: Shop Foreman

LOCATION: 200 Park Drive

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs service and repair tasks on all city vehicles and equipment, procures parts and supplies for service and repairs, and assists with fabrications as needed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Performs repairs on vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment, including removal and replacement of brake systems, transmissions, electrical and electronic control and distribution systems, cooling system radiators, hoses and control components, suspension systems, steering joints hydraulic pumps, manifolds and distribution lines, and fuel systems components and distribution lines, small engine and equipment repair.

Coordinates with the shop foreman to plan and schedule daily work tasks for self and other shop personnel.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Plans and procures repair and service parts and materials for shop.
  • Assists in maintaining service records on vehicles and equipment.
  • Repairs trucks to distribute salt and plow snow.
  • Provides information on costs and procedures for superintendent as required.
  • Monitors operator's performance of readiness check on trucks and equipment and inspects wash-down and servicing of equipment and trucks after snow and ice treatment operations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Ability to use diagnostic equipment, powered tools and hand tools correctly for diagnosing and repairing vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to perform lifting of heavy objects including wheels, tires, springs, brake components, radiators, and other truck, vehicle and equipment components.
  • Ability to perform physical labor for sustained time periods in all weather conditions occurring throughout the year.
  • Ability to read, understand and explain written instructions, diagrams and schematics for service, repair and diagnostics.
  • Ability to effectively communicate work task procedures, policy interpretations and work status data to superiors and subordinates.
  • Ability to respond to short notice call-up for snow and ice treatment operations or other emergency operations, and to work extended overtime hours.
  • Must have knowledge of cutting, welding and some fabrication as needed.

EQUIPMENT USED TO PERFORM THE JOB:

Power and hand tools, diagnostic equipment, Cutting torch and welding on all vehicles and equipment mentioned above.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • Commercial Driver's License, Class A preferred.
  • Minimum total combined vocational training in an accredited vehicle mechanic school and 3 years of vehicle repair work experience supervised by an experienced mechanic, preferred.
