Salary: 15.95 - 20.40 DOE

Job Summary:


Position assists with fleet repairs on cars, trucks, light/heavy duty equipment as well as small equipment including lawn mowers, chainsaws, etc. Follows a preventative maintenance program for all Town vehicles and equipment.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Performs minor repairs and diagnose mechanical problems on brake, hydraulic, steering, cooling, and electrical systems to gas/diesel engines.
  • Learns to perform major tune-ups and scheduled maintenance to gas/diesel engines.
  • Learns to perform minor automotive body work such as installing glass and removing or replacing internal or external body parts or accessories.
  • Independently performs oil changes, tire changes, etc., on small vehicles, trucks, and fire engines in accordance with direction and guidance provided by Lead Vehicle Mechanic.
  • Organizes tools and parts, observes and corrects unsafe situations, as well as maintains the presentability of the shop area
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Six months of paid experience in performing routine automotive maintenance such as oil changes, tire repair/replacement, or body work, OR;
  • Completion of an entry level automotive repair course.
  • The incumbent may promote to Vehicle Mechanic II upon the successful completion of the probationary period and predetermined qualifications standards.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:


  • Must be able to read and interpret standard automotive manuals, diagrams, prints and specifications.
  • Must be able to learn the safe and effective use of specialized machinery, i.e., engine analyzer and air conditioning equipment. Expected to be able to diagnose and make complete repairs on all mechanical problems.
  • Must be able to learn how to use inside/outside calipers, cylinder gauges and dial indicators.
  • Must have basic knowledge of automotive components and assemblies and how they operate in relationship to each other, i.e. automatic transmission and electrical systems.
  • Must have basic knowledge of mathematics and the ability to maintain accurate records and perform computations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers and co-workers.
  • Ability to take initiative and self-engage in learning, professional development, and improvement of the work environment.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk and climb stairs.
  • Ability to adequately read schematics, diagrams, and drawings.
  • Mechanical ability to troubleshoot causes of mechanical failure and determine appropriate corrective action.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards for industrial environment
