Job Description

Location: Upper Marlboro, MD

Home Innovation Research Labs is looking for an experienced test engineer to join our team of building scientists and research engineers. We are searching for a motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams in our materials and structures lab. This position requires the ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs. An accredited third-party inspection agency, product testing laboratory and certification body, Home Innovation provides a variety of product testing services to a wide array of clients from Fortune 100 companies to start-ups. Working in our premier testing laboratory, the ideal engineer candidate will provide consulting services to assist clients with their R&D testing needs and guide them through the process of acquiring certification of their products to building codes. The right candidate will have exceptional skills with applying engineering principles and an advanced understanding of the regulatory environment that underpins the codes and standards for materials, components and system used in the construction of buildings.

Experience working in an accredited test lab is a MUST.

Requirements:

  • Experience in physical/mechanical testing of building products and materials with the ability to evaluate results in relation to design or rated specifications and test objectives
  • Superior analytical skills, ability to solve complex and multi-faceted problems – must be able to conceptualize and implement unique product testing methodologies
  • Sophisticated understanding of building codes and standards
  • Fundamental understanding of the ICC-ES Conformity Assessment process
  • Familiarity with the IAS Accreditation Criteria and quality management principles for testing laboratories, inspection agencies and certification agencies
  • Knowledge of the concept of test uncertainty and measurement error accumulation
  • Experience programming with LabVIEW and using CAD software
  • Ability to develop key client relationships
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for technical communications

Education, Certifications, Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (civil, structural, mechanical, materials preferred)
  • Professional Engineering registration (PE License) required
  • Eight or more years of laboratory experience or related professional experience required

Responsibilities:

  • Devise, fabricate, modify, or adjust testing apparatus/equipment to meet test specifications
  • Consult with client prospects to develop proposals for testing work
  • Develop test plans by applying relevant test protocols and sound engineering principles and practices
  • Design and supervise the construction of test fixtures and test samples
  • Manage client projects including tests conducted internally and subcontracted
  • Conduct testing and ensure technical accuracy of results obtained
  • Prepare engineering reports for clients
  • Assist with laboratory accreditation efforts, including participating in audits and ensuring adherence to Quality Management System (QMS)
