UOVO, the nation’s leading storage and services provider for art, archives, and collectibles seeks a Lead Crater to join its dynamic and growing team. The ideal candidate will be a team player, have experience working in art storage and collection management experience and will be comfortable fabricating crates and packing and moving a wide range of art objects. The Lead Crater will report to the Crateshop Manager in South San Francisco.

Core Responsibilities
  • With oversight from the Supervisor, responsible for the day-to-day fabrication of all crates in South San Francisco, ensuring the highest level of client satisfaction, safety, and quality of work
  • Ensure all work is executed to meet deadlines; proactively communicating to the Supervisor when an issue is encountered
  • Maintain a safe working environment in the shop and adhere to established safety rules and regulations, meeting OSHA standards for woodworking and woodworking machinery
  • Calculate, draw and create cut sheets that can be followed for all products producedCrate and pack for transportation and storage - properly handling art objects, fragile and artistic material, and antique / high-end furniture using the appropriate methods and materials
  • Play an active and leading role in maintaining the highest crating standards and best practices for packing and crating while working in conjunction with other Operations team members to ensure all UOVO team members assigned to the shop are well trained and mentored to crate in a streamlined fashion
  • Coordinate projects with the Supervisor to provide cost and timeline estimates for potential crating projects
  • Work closely with the Inventory Control team to scan property and update inventory records, ensuring accurate barcoding, locations, and dimensions are always maintained for crates
  • When applicable, conduct documented site visits to assess and estimate labor and material needs for packing and crating projects
  • Audit, receive, and organize materials and supplies to ensure the crate shop par levels are maintained
  • Provide on-site and off-site support as needed with condition reporting, packing, crating, inventory, warehousing, and installation
  • Clean and organize the crate shop on a daily basis, ethically discarding or disposing of scrap wood and wood dust regularly
  • Break down crates, trash, and other materials as needed
  • Some overtime and weekend work may apply
  • Other tasks as assigned by Supervisor

Qualifications & Skills
  • 2+ years art crating or woodshop experience strongly preferred
  • Must be proficient in the safe use of hand tools, saws and other woodworking tools and machinery (cabinet saw, compound mitre saw, pneumatic staple gun, random orbital sander, glue gun, drill gun, routers, etc). 
  • Experience handling 2D and 3D artworks
  • Ability to read a tape measure and strong grasp of fractional math 
  • Team Player who can work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Comfortable in a results-driven workplace
  • Excellent customer service as well as strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of art handling best practices, including packing, framing, wrapping, installations, and crating
  • Experience with a variety of fine art mediums and packing materials
  • Ability to push and pull 150 pounds on a dolly or cart, as well as 50 pounds without mechanical aid
  • Ability to carry 40 pounds of varying size and shape up to a distance of 90 feet
  • Ability to stand, walk, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, twist, and reach overhead
  • Ability to be exposed to outside weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain and snow
  • Ability to safely operate a forklift
  • Familiarity with the use of hand trucks, pallet jacks, pry lever bars, dollies and other warehouse equipment 

This in-person position requires on-site presence at UOVO’s South San Francisco facility five days a week with occasional requests to work nights and on weekends.
