Position Description
Lee Montessori PCS implements a series of Specials, which are school-based enrichment sessions that build on the Montessori philosophy.The Specials Teacher works under the direction of the Assistant Head of School to ensure that special subject curriculum and pedagogy honor the diverse traditions and cultures of our children (PK3 - 6th grade) and community.
The specials teacher is responsible for delivering dynamic, hands-on, and educational enrichment activities that promote cultural/global awareness, identity, community, and justice, through a variety of platforms including but not limited to creative movement, drumming and music, foreign language, dramatic arts and more. We are open to exploring various curricula and content from a diversity of backgrounds and disciplines.
Major Responsibilities
- Draft and implement a coherent and developmentally appropriate curriculum to linguistically and culturally diverse students in a relative speciality (Movement; Arts & Crafts, Music, etc.). See above examples of specialties.
- Document all syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, rubrics, and other instructional materials and methods;
- Use instructional practices in accordance with the Montessori philosophy and in ways that affirm all children,
- Reinforce (and develop) school-wide rules and expectations that respect the backgrounds and culture of children of the global majority;
- Daily room setup and breakdown, including but not limited to moving materials, supplies, and equipment necessary and setting up classrooms;
- Meeting regularly with students to work with them in assessing their own success and facilitating an individual path of progress;
- Working with students of varying abilities assigned to the classroom, including those with learning exceptionalities, as well as attending meetings to support children who require it.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with school day activities (recess, lunch, field trips, supervision);
- Maintain paper and electronic student files;
- Seek training in ABAR and culturally relevant curriculum and pedagogy;
- Perform additional administrative and support duties as needed.
Requirements
- Experience with the Montessori Method preferred.
- At least two years teaching experience in an urban setting preferred.
- Have a firm commitment to upholding the school's mission.
- Experience in individual and collaborative curriculum development.
