DESCRIPTION

The PMHNP will assist individuals, groups, and families by using a combination of clinical mental health and human development principles to develop an understanding of personal problems, to define goals, and to develop action plans to resolve life’s challenges. The PMHNP is part of an integrated team of administrative and clinical team members. LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Employment with Light Counseling is of a confidential nature and operates in accordance with federal and state privacy laws and practices (i.e., HIPAA). All work is performed under supervision but requires the ability to effectively function independently, with flexibility, initiative, maturity, and decision-making within the framework of Light Counseling’s policy and employee handbook. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides services to a varied population of children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples.
  • Delivers case management services
  • Follows all regulations and company policies in service provision and documentation
  • Participates in educational programs, in-service meetings, clinician meetings, and workshops to enhance professional development and maintain currency of methodology and techniques
  • Takes initiative to link clients to other services
  • May work with community groups around unmet and special needs and may carry a special community assignment relevant to Light Counseling's mission
  • May be assigned to instruct and direct graduate student interns and residents
  • Assess patient conditions in the initial consultation and determine Level of Care
  • Evaluate patient and formulate a diagnosis
  • Order appropriate tests to help formulate an accurate diagnosis
  • Develop, implement, and monitor a treatment plan based on the diagnosis and presentation severity
  • Prescribe and monitor a full range of FDA approved psychotropic medications
  • When requested, integrating Biblical principles, modalities, and spiritual disciplines into the interactions and therapy with the patient.
  • Track patient progress and collaborate with physician (if not able to practice autonomously) and other psychological and medical healthcare providers regarding plans of care and treatment as needed and indicated
  • Provide mental health education, ongoing support, and follow-up care for patients and their families as needed and indicated.
  • Comfort working with people of diverse backgrounds and faiths.
  • Collaborate with therapists in-house on cases that are shared.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental health problems.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to practice active listening skills to best react and understand how new information can impact current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Ability to use appropriate training, instructional methods, and techniques/procedures based upon the situation and current qualifications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate via written and verbal communication.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current RN and ARNP licenses in the Commonwealth of Virginia with prescriptive authority
  • Current national nurse practitioner certification
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification
  • Active DEA registration, schedule II - VI
  • Buprenorphine Waiver desirable but not mandatory. Can obtain in first 3 months.
  • M.S. in Nursing required, DNP preferred
  • Virginia State Board of Nursing License as a Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive authority
  • Nurse Practitioner Mental Health and Psychiatry experience in the full scope of the role
  • At least 3 years postgraduate with a collaborating psychiatrist, while the ideal candidate will have five postgraduate years (documented).
  • Assessing and treating both Dual Diagnosis and Mental Health only patients in an outpatient setting
  • Treating ages 13 and older. Treating children desirable but not a must.
  • Integrating Christian faith and worldview with therapy in prior clinical activities strongly desired. If no experience in this area, then a strong desire to become accomplished in this modality/specialty.
  • Working in an Electronic Medical/Health Record
  • Telemedicine experience preferred, altho majority of sessions will be in person.
  • Working with a multidisciplinary team to maximize patient outcomes.
  • Must have an active and in-good-standing license with the Virginia Department of Health Professions.
  • Current and up-to-date CAQH profile (if applicable)
  • Current Professional Liability Insurance
  • Complete all required background checks including drug tests.

Whether you are able to practice autonomously or need to have a collaborating psychiatrist, you will have access to Karl Benzio, MD, a board-certified psychiatrist with over 30 years of clinical experience and success at many levels of care. Dr. Karl is nationally recognized for his understanding of Practical Neuro-Theology, that is, the ability to practically and seamlessly integrate his faith with his psychiatric expertise and communicate it to patients and colleagues for maximal psychospiritual healing.
