Intake Clinician, Inpatient Psychiatric Services

Anna Jaques Hospital, located in the seaside town of Newburyport, MA is seeking an experienced Intake Clinician will perform assigned tasks, assume responsibilities delegated by Senior personnel, and participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, in various aspects of patient care with an emphasis on therapeutic activities conducted with assigned individuals and groups.

How You Care for Our Patients
As an Intake Clinician you would:
  • Complete the patient/family assessments referred from the emergency services and the bed finding team for presentation to the attending psychiatrist/PMHNP.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively, using good clinical judgment to both psychiatric and medical emergencies.
  • Ability to identify problems, implement resolution, reassess situation/problem.
  • Excellent interpersonal relations with the ability to interact in a direct, professional, tactful, gracious manner with all professional/non-professional contacts; includes all areas of verbal/non-verbal communication within the contest of direct/non-direct contact; history of excellent interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work under stress, with an unpredictable patient flow, in a sometimes crowded work environment.
  • A personal disposition that is warm, friendly, caring, kind, and hospitable towards patients, and colleagues.
  • Exhibit openness and willingness to learn.
  • History/track record of all services consistently delivered with a service excellent attitude
  • Ability and willingness to work in a managed care environment.
  • Excellent ability and history of direct, gracious, courteous, kind face-to-face, telephone, and nonverbal skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to utilize the DSM; develop provisional diagnoses.
  • Provide all care to assigned patients; provide helpful support/assistance to other staff.
  • Assure continuity of care through liaison with other programs and agencies.
  • Provides accurate, timely information to co-workers, physicians, outside agencies, etc. with a professional, courteous manner/attitude.
  • Meet the standards for documentation and complete all required paperwork.
  • Develop emergency/ongoing management plans for patients who frequent the service regularly.
  • Respond to psychiatric and medical emergencies as a team member.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Massachusetts mental health law; obtains appropriate consent or commitment authorization as needed.
  • Prioritize patients according to needs; anticipates changes in patient’s condition and implement treatment measures in the charge role
  • Demonstrate knowledge of insurance programs; obtain authorizations as needed; demonstrate knowledge of registration/financial issues/concerns.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patients.
  • Active participation and ongoing maintenance of quality management activities; development of standards from problem identification.
  • Maintain annual Staff Development recertifications.
  • Assist with the direction and the coordination of specific tasks during crisis situations.
  • Inform Shift Coordinator /Nurse Manager of pertinent issues, solutions, and re-evaluation.
  • Ability to conduct brief, efficient telephone screening using standardized, semi-structured interviews while assessing the severity of psychiatric illness/lethality in the patient requesting services.
  • Ability to evaluate presenting symptomatology for the purpose of determining the appropriateness of referrals for inpatient admissions.
  • Work with the emergency services and bed finding team for clinical issues/questions as needed.
  • Function as liaison with community agencies and organizations for facilitate patient/family care and provide information and referrals to lay persons, external agencies, and professionals and regional treatment centers when working both in telephone triage and emergency services.
  • Document all patient, professional and agency telephone contacts for entry into the information tracking system.
  • Ability to operate with a high level of efficacy interacting with the clinical computer programs.
  • Ability to trace phone calls for patient related distress call; assess lethality; accurately and efficiently initiate involuntary proceedings as needed.
  • Perform admission coordination duties as assigned.


You bring meaningful experience
Successful Candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services or a related field with a minimum of three years in a clinical psychiatric setting or an entry level Masters Degree.
  • Experience in a supervisory/charge position preferred.
