Job Description

Families in Recovery Program:

Liberation Programs' Families in Recovery (FIRP) is an inpatient program in Norwalk, CT for pregnant and parenting women with children. FIRP has been in existence since 1994 and is unique in our region. It is the only inpatient treatment program for pregnant and parenting women in Fairfield County. Mothers can have up to two children ages birth to 10 years old, and FIRP is the only inpatient program in Connecticut where mothers can bring two children up to the age of 10 into the program with them. FIRP is gender and trauma sensitive with an emphasis on individual and family needs. Throughout treatment, mothers are supported in managing challenges related to substance use disorder (SUD), building, enhancing and maintaining life skills, peer-to-peer support and accessing resources to provide safe, nurturing homes for their children and themselves as they prepare to transition back to the community.

JOB FUNCTION:

Job Purpose/Function: Child Care Specialist provides a safe, enriching play/learning environment for children ages newborn to 10 years old. Supervise activities, engage in stimulating play and age-appropriate games while meeting the basic needs of children. Collaborate with the clinical team regarding individual needs as appropriate. Provide support to parent as well as resources and information to enhance positive parenting skills.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensure the physical and overall well-being of the children.
    • Provide a safe, nurturing, fun, orderly and sanitary environment.
    • Plan and supervise balanced routines that include physical activities and rest.
    • Plan, implement and supervise structured educational activities appropriate for developmental age and stage; use various learning methods such as stories, games and drawing for intellectual stimulation.
    • Teach positive behaviors, good manners, and appropriate behavioral socialization & boundaries (no hitting, biting & aggression etc.) through positive reinforcement.
    • Assist children in bathroom; change diapers as needed and appropriate with parent support.

2. Serve as a resource and mentor for mothers.

    • Identify and utilize appropriate community resources, such as library, aquarium, parks to plan healthy activities for children as well as connect parents with such resources.
    • Research and provide best practice educational materials to mothers on parenting skills including conflict mediation and resolution techniques.
    • Facilitate mother/child (ren) group to encourage skill development and enhance parenting interactions.
  1. 3. Communicate progress/concerns to mothers, staff, and stakeholders as relevant.

    • Maintain positive working relationships with mother and child (ren)
    • Communicate parenting skill development progress and/or concerns with clinical team.
    • Ensure appropriate documentation of services provided.
    • Maintain a daily log of activities including time in/out of the childcare room and communicate all unusual occurrences to mothers immediately and via log and written report.
  1. 4. Develop and maintain collaborative relationship with referral sources including school and other child service agencies
