COMMERCIAL BANKER JOB DESCRIPTION

The Commercial Banker manages a portfolio of deposits and loans, prospects for new customers, and cross sells banking products and services by performing the following essential duties and responsibilities. This role is pivotal in driving growth and profitability by managing and cultivating relationships with commercial clients. The Commercial Banker is responsible for understanding the financial needs of businesses, providing tailored financial solutions, and ensuring exceptional customer service. This position requires a deep understanding of commercial banking products, strong analytical skills, and excellent communication abilities. The Commercial Banker is responsible for soliciting, building, and maintaining relationships with commercial bank clients and servicing a wide variety of real estate and commercial banking opportunities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Present loan presentations to appropriate loan committees, as required.
  • Initiate interest rate structures that are most beneficial to the bank.
  • Promote and participate in the bank’s special credit programs and other CRA programs.
  • Effectively prospects for clients and delivers creative financial solutions to meet their needs.
  • Solicit commercial loan customers; personally interview, assesses and determines credit worthiness of loan applicants.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with commercial clients to understand their financial goals, challenges, and needs.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, providing personalized financial advice and solutions.
  • Regularly engage with clients to assess satisfaction, identify opportunities, and address concerns.
  • Follow up with applicants and secure the necessary information to underwrite the loan and conducts site visits if needed.
  • Apply credit/analytical skills toward the effective underwriting of credit risk and engages in development of loan structure, terms, pricing and documentation toward the approval and closing of loans that achieve the objectives of the bank.
  • Conduct thorough financial analysis of clients’ businesses, including financial statements, cash flow projections, and risk profiles.
  • Assess creditworthiness and evaluate risks associated with lending proposals.
  • Ensure all collateral interests taken to secure the lending exposure of the bank are legally perfected and appropriately valued, monitored and insured.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to cross-sell banking products and services, including treasury management, deposit accounts and investment options.
  • Stay informed about market trends, industry developments, and competitive offerings to identify opportunities for growth.
  • Comply with all bank policies and procedures as well as related Federal, State and industry laws and regulations pertaining to the bank’s lending and banking activities.
  • Develop revenue growth through generation of loans and deposits while meeting production goals annually.
  • Develop and maintain commercial banking relationships through community involvement and building and maintaining business networking.
  • Assist in building the bank’s community profile by individually participating in community activities such as serving on non-profit organizations board of directors, volunteering at local nonprofit organizations and fundraising for community partners when appropriate.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment by sharing expertise and best practices.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This work is sedentary and requires the following physical activities:

  • Sitting for long periods of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking, hearing, and visual acuity.
  • Frequent lifting (up to 10 pounds of paper supplies or minor office equipment).

PROFICIENCIES

  • Must have a solid understanding of structuring and underwriting complex commercial credits.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person and over the phone.
  • Basic word processing and computer database skills.
  • Ability to learn and navigate computer systems and websites necessary to complete job description and other duties as assigned.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work with individuals and groups at all organization levels; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks; good time-management, organizational, problem-prevention and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of banking rules, regulations, laws and all policies and procedures pertaining to them including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act.
  • Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to study and apply new information.
  • Ability to learn products, services and procedures quickly and accurately; explain concepts clearly to customers.
  • Ability to establish credibility and rapport, be friendly and personable and look for ways to benefit the customer.
  • Excellent customer contact skills; comfortable asking questions/interviewing customers about their financial situation; strong listening skills.
  • Must be organized and maintain a positive demeanor in all situations.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Commercial Loan Officer School preferred.
  • 7+ years in banking with extensive experience/knowledge in credit and lending to clients.
  • 5+ years managing a customer loan portfolio.
  • Proven annual production.
