General Staff Accountant Functions:

Performs a variety of accounting and financial reporting tasks for specific clients. Prepares individual, fiduciary, partnership, non-profit, and corporate returns under the close supervision of Manager. Handles special projects as required by the Firm.

Supervision Received:

Success closely monitored by Manager or Senior based on timeliness and accuracy of accounting methods and report preparation, appropriate time expenditure on projects, correct application of cost management principles, and follow-through on all activities associated with the Staff Accountant I function.

Scope & Dimensions:

The precision and attentiveness demonstrated by the Staff Accountant I are critical to the ability of the Firm's Accountants to perform their functions efficiently and effectively. The maintenance of an appropriate number of billable hours is important in meeting the Firm's cash flow requirements. Performance in this capacity will impact the entire organization by contributing to the Firm's revenues and enhancing the Firm's reputation as one capable of serving its clients with a broad range of services by highly skilled professionals.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Accounting
    • Be familiar with the Firm's policies and procedures.
    • Correctly and consistently perform assigned accounting procedures.
    • Process payroll and understand tax deposit requirements and payroll journal entries.
    • Make basic recommendations regarding specific accounts.
    • Understand financial accounting, including reviewing and analyzing client data and proposing adjustments.
    • Understand the need for self-review and make an effort to catch errors consistent with a Staff Accountant I level.
    • Keep supervisor informed of all important developments in client engagements.
  • Tax
    • Proficiently process 1099's, sales tax returns, and business property tax statements.
    • Understand basic tax code sections and regulations and apply them correctly and consistently.
    • Regularly read industry newsletters and attempt to stay current on tax legislation and interpretations.
    • Understand basic tax planning and procedures.
    • Correctly prepare basic corporate, individual, partnership, fiduciary, and other tax returns with considerable supervision.
  • Research
    • Be familiar with research tools and use them regularly.
  • Administration
    • Regularly update accounting and tax procedures and document them clearly.
    • Keep WIP updated daily and add projects as assigned.
    • Record time daily and accurately. Submit weekly timesheets timely.
    • Be familiar with engagement and promptly notify supervisor when work is outside of scope.
    • Monitor own billable and administrative time to steadily move towards achieving expectations.

Knowledge, Experience, and Educational Requirements:
  • Accounting degree and pursuing CPA license.
  • Zero to three years experience in public accounting.
  • Familiarity with pertinent IRC sections and state rules and regulations.
  • Understanding of the rules, requirements, and code of conduct of the AICPA and other government agencies.
  • Pursuing CPA license.
  • Proficiency in Quickbooks, PCS, UltraTax, Word, EXCEL, Sureprep and Outlook.
  • Proficient in typing and developing proficiency in 10-key by touch.
  • Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures in the Accounting field.
