About the role:

As aiEDU's first Director, Communications, you will play a pivotal role in orchestrating the organization's communications strategy, media relations, and storytelling efforts. Core responsibilities include developing and executing an integrated communications strategy, crafting compelling press releases and managing partner announcements, newsletters and other audience-specific materials, marketing, and overseeing content development projects including videos and blog posts. This role also includes guiding communications around our strategic partnerships, offering advice and support to key partners, and collaborating with aiEDU's funders to create synergized media and content strategies.

A significant facet of this role involves organization-wide communications, from drafting talking points for presentations and pitch meetings to supporting other teams at aiEDU with comms best practices. The Director, Communications will also create collateral for organization-wide communications, such as presentations and training materials.

The Director of Communications will assess the effectiveness of our communications and marketing strategies using detailed media activity reports, ensuring optimal performance across various channels. This role is an excellent opportunity for a strategic and creative communicator who can shape and amplify aiEDU's narrative and impact.

⭐ Role Details
  • Location: This full-time, exempt position can be done on a flexible schedule remotely from anywhere in the U.S. with access to high speed internet.The candidate should be comfortable and equipped to work efficiently in a remote work environment.
  • Compensation: The baseline compensation for this role is $145,000 - $165,000 depending on experience.

  • Start date: We'd like a candidate to start as soon as possible after receiving an offer, though there is some flexibility.
✅ Your Responsibilities:

Communications & Media Relations - 45%

  • Lead aiEDU's media relations efforts, including:
    • Owning proactive storytelling and reactive communications for media;
    • Generating press coverage that meets organizational goals and reaches key audiences including school districts, policy makers, government agencies, nonprofits, and other stakeholders; and
    • Serving as the spokesperson of record for aiEDU
  • Develop and implement effective communication strategies that build brand awareness, and advocacy and leverage aiEDU's vast network of partners
  • Create communication and marketing strategies for new products, launches, events, and promotions.
  • Advise, collaborate with, and support key aiEDU partners/funders with communications strategies.
  • Prepare detailed media activity reports.
  • Create informative and interesting press releases, press kits, newsletters, and related marketing materials.
Content Creation & Marketing - 40%
  • Support the development of creative, compelling, and effective means of communicating the innovations, impact, and mission that aiEDU works towards.
  • Supervise projects to guarantee all content is publication-ready.
  • Produce collateral for org-wide communications– presentations, trainings
  • Support c-suite, especially the CEO, with drafting social media content
  • Create content for the leadership team for events, panels, podcasts, etc.
Internal Communications - 15%
  • Develop materials to educate staff on communication practices
  • Write talking points for presentations, pitch meetings, advocacy conversations, etc.
  • Perform communications research and monitor ways that the organization can engage in conversations

Your Impact:

Within 1 Month, You Will:
  • Develop a keen understanding of aiEDU, its mission, and its current messaging
  • Learn about the org's existing communications and marketing activities, and begin to identify opportunities to consolidate and streamline efforts
Within 3 Months, You Will:
  • Completed measurable engagements with media.
  • Created specific content for use by internal teams, such as talking points, presentations, and/or training materials
Within 6 Months, You Will:
  • Identified opportunities to develop aiEDU's communications strategies beyond those outlined here
  • Have built processes for tracking and quantifying media engagement.
Within a Year, You Will:
  • Have built and executed on a robust communications plan, with strategies to target specific stakeholders
  • Have built plans and executed on new avenues for raising aiEDU's brand recognition, such as at conferences, on podcasts, or through paid media.

  • 8+ years in a marketing, public relations,and/or communications role
  • Ability to tailor complex messages for different audiences in a manner that they can understand and relate to.
  • Start-up experience. Experience or familiarity with startup environments, demonstrating adaptability and initiative.
  • Have a deep excitement for building 0-1 and creating your path here at aiEDU.
  • Passion for innovation and tech equity in public education.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities amidst ambiguity and to leverage creative thinking and resourcefulness
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Slack with the ability to produce high quality work products.
