Job purpose

The Associate Sound and Technology Supervisor assists in all aspects of Sound, Multimedia, and new forms of theatrical technology for the DCPA Theatre Company. This is to include exploration and implementation of new technology that does not fall into our established departments (lighting, sound, set, automation, costumes, crafts) and offering support to our established departments when they are exploring new tech.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Assist with drafting, inventories, documentation, and calendars relating to the Sound & Technology Department
  • Assist in Supervision of Sound/Video/Technology operators
  • Supervision of prep and installation of Sound, Technology, and Multimedia equipment in the theatres prior to any given production’s first technical rehearsal
  • Attend technical rehearsals as required
  • Suggest purchases for Multimedia and Technology related equipment and materials
  • Oversight of delivering video, projections, and other Multimedia for productions of the DCPA Theatre Company, Off-Center and Education within tight timelines
  • Assist on a company-wide level with other DCPA A/V needs as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and/or experience:

  • Bachelor’s level degree and/or demonstrated 4+ years[GU1] in professional Sound/Multimedia/Technology implementation
  • Proven experience, 2+ years, as a technician in the area of IT/AV
  • Proficient with CAD/Vectorworks, drafting, and scale drawings
  • Prior experience leading teams in equipment installation and troubleshooting
  • Prior experience in other area(s) of technical theatre
  • Ability to research, learn and implement new forms of technology as they arise

The most qualified candidates will possess the following:

  • Strong organizational and document creation skills; Spreadsheets and inventories in particular
  • Comfortable working on both Mac and Windows based systems
  • IT and network troubleshooting and installation experience
  • Experience with Schematic based DSPs (Q-Sys, Symetrix, Extron, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Qlab programming and operation
  • Familiar with video/projection systems - BNC/SDI/DTV distribution experience a plus
  • Experience with wiring and soldering cables and electronics, GPIO and embedded show control systems
  • Clear understanding of the theatrical artistic process
  • Effective communication skills
  • A positive, professional, and collaborative attitude even during periods of high pressure
  • Ability to work well alone or with a group
  • Experience working with a large team
  • Valid driver’s license

Supervisor responsibilities

Assists in supervision of Sound/Video/Technology Technicians

Working conditions
This is a dynamic position that requires working in a variety of different environments which may include: office or studio space, sound shop, traditional theatre space (onstage, in house, backstage and in technical areas such as grids), and off-site or non-traditional spaces. Position requires a flexible schedule, including periodic long hours, irregular hours, and nights, weekends, and holidays as required. May be asked to work at heights up to 70’, drive a vehicle, lift up to 40 lbs. and use industrial tools.


Physical requirements
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is constantly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
