Job Description

TITLE: Afterschool Literacy Tutor (Certified Educator)

DEPARTMENT: Operations

REPORTS TO: Branch Director

STATUS: ❒ Part-Time ❒ Temporary

POSITION SUMMARY:

Tutors are part-time temporary employees whose work hours will be set by the Branch & Program Director. Tutors will complete the position’s essential function during the school year. BGCGW anticipates that Tutors will work from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm or 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm three times a week, Monday through Friday. Tutors will be assigned groups of no more than 4 students in grades 1st -6th. High Impact Tutoring (H.I.T) will assist students in developing and reinforcing literacy skills. Using a range of tools, tutors will support students’ academic development, equipping them with skills they can implement now, and use through high school and beyond.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Academics

  • Implement effective instructional lesson plans with clear learning outcomes using Wilson Foundations,
  • Consistently track student data using progress-monitoring tools,
  • Provide diverse reading experiences and opportunities for children of all abilities,
  • Implement appropriate accommodations and modifications to meet varying student need,

Social and Emotional

  • Tutors will promote joy through check in games and activities, developing a close relationship with students and highlighting success during practice assessments,

Administrative

  • Track, gather and evaluate data to monitor children’s academic growth,
  • Collaborate with site teachers and staff to identify students most suitable for tutoring hubs,
  • BGCGW will host workshops from Wilson to provide Tutors with the training, practice, and guidance needed to effectively begin facilitating the Foundations curriculum. To ensure our Tutors are prepared with the essential skills to deliver high-impact interventions, BGCGW will host intensive pre-service training that include sessions covering the foundations of phonics and reading comprehension, progress tracking, building rapport, and more.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: (Education, experience, skills required)

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Certified Educator - 1st through 6th Grade.
  • Minimum of three years’ work experience in non-profit (Boys & Girls Clubs) organization planning, and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.
  • Demonstrated organizational, staff and project management abilities.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • Ability to recruit, train, supervise, and motivate staff.
  • Demonstrated ability in working with young people, parents and community leaders.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Valid Driver’s License

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Requires the ability to speak, hear, use a personal computer for standard business communications, and the ability lift up to 15 lbs.
