Position Title: Sport Club Head Coach: Men’s Rugby
GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports, the Head Coach for the Men’s Rugby team will be responsible for the coordination and operations of the Associated Students of San Diego State University 7s and 15s Men’s Rugby program. The primary areas of focus will be practice planning and implementation, game day coaching, individual player and team development; running and controlling team drills in a safe and effective manner; student athlete recruitment and retention, assisting with fundraising, and working in coordination with the league, team officers and A.S. staff to develop the competition and travel schedule. The Head Coach must be available during the fall and spring seasons for practices, weekend home games and travel weekends for away games. This position requires availability for morning, evening, and weekend hours.
The Head Coach is responsible for the enforcement of rules, policies, and procedures as outlined in the Sport Club Handbook as well as all duties associated with coaching a competitive collegiate club program. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to student development and comply with all policies and procedures established by Associated Students/SDSU, the Sport Club Program and sport specific leagues while serving as a positive role model for the program and SDSU.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESPrimary Functions
Complies with all job expectations as outlined in the Associated Students/SDSU Sport Club Coaching Agreement
Works collaboratively with team officers and sport club administrators to develop and achieve program priorities
Plans and conducts high quality team practices, training sessions and competition coaching
Develops and implements strategies for motivating student-athletes to perform at maximum levels as both individuals and a team
Oversees the conditioning and training of team members to ensure that student athletes are physically prepared for competition
Ensures assistant coaches are working effectively within program expectations
Ensures individual and program compliance with all policies and procedures of Associated Students/SDSU, Aztec Recreation, USA Rugby and league rules
Ensures safety of all team members, assistant coaches, and equipment is the top priority at all times
Ensures all injuries sustained in practices or competition are reported, and works with athletic trainers and sport club administrators to ensure clear to play protocols are followed
Assists with the coordination of travel arrangements and ensures travel itineraries are developed and communicated with each team member and sport club program administrators
Assists team in achieving recruiting goals
Assists team in achieving fundraising goals
Works with coaches from other programs and sport leagues to coordinate scrimmages and competitions
Assists with the necessary equipment maintenance and repairs
Assists in the outreach to alumni with program updates/communication and fundraising goals
Represents the team in regional or national meetings with other coaches or organizations
Performs other duties as assigned

Safety
Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
Adheres to Associated Students’ Code of Safe Practice
Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence Ensures completion proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/ or non-employee) and forwards to supervisor
Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum and Preferred Requirements
Bachelor's Degree (preferred)
Experience:
Three (3) to five (5) years rugby coaching experience (required), preferably at a USA Rugby recognized institution.
Proficient knowledge of Aztec Recreation programs, facilities, and policies (required)
Knowledge of Microsoft applications (required) and Fusion (preferred)
License & Certification:
American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED certifications (required)
Valid California Drivers’ License and proof of automobile insurance (required)
Trainings:
Must complete Gender Awareness and Sexual Harassment Prevention training within 30 days of hire
Must complete the California Defensive Driving Course
Attend all mandatory Aztec Recreation/Sport Club Staff meetings and trainings as directed

Must be able to work with confidential items and understand the importance of confidentiality in project work

Commitment to adhere to all the policies, rules, and regulations of Associated Students/ SDSU, Aztec Recreation and sport leagues
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESDemonstrated commitment to student success and ability to recruit, train, and evaluate collegiate student athletes
Have a strong coaching background with an emphasis on skill development and leadership
Have a solid knowledge of USA RUGBY regulations and guidelines
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with student athletes, team officers, coaches, administrators and alumni
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to handle difficult situations involving participants with patience, good judgment, and with diplomacy is expected
SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a part-time position. Flexibility and willingness to work up to 25 hours per week; employee schedules vary according to team needs throughout the academic year.

EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: This is a part-time hourly position at $17.00 per hour.
A Background Check (including a criminal records check) and Live Scan must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered this position with Associated Students.
