Principal Controls Engineer

What you’ll do:

As the Principal Controls Engineer, you will: 

  • Lead and contribute to the development of a new control system for our solar trackers.
  • Lead and contribute to the implementation of new algorithms and features into our existing controller platform.
  • Assign goals and tasks to other controls/electrical engineers and technicians, and guide them to meet the assigned goals.
  • Work with electronics suppliers, scoping and overseeing their work as necessary.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to deploy and test the new control system, features, and software at real solar sites; travel as necessary.
  • Investigate and resolve failures of control-system components; travel as necessary.
  • Report the status of work regularly to the hiring manager and senior management.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

The qualifications you must have:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • 6+ years of experience in designing and implementing control systems using microcontrollers or PLCs; the candidate must have experience building solutions from ground up and must be able to do the controller programming himself/herself.
  • 4+ years of product development experience, including prototype engineering and testing, detailed product design (incl. vendor qualification, FMEA, certification, production strategy planning, and etc.). The candidate will be asked to present his/her portfolio in the interview process.
  • Willingness to learn new programming languages, new controller architectures, and new skillsets as needed for the control system development.
  • Ability to manage R&D projects involving multiple stakeholders; Ability to set up and work towards 3-6-month milestones to meet the final objectives.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, smaller company environment.

 

Our preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in designing control systems for solar trackers.
  • Experience in developing motion control applications using DC or AC motors.
  • Experience in programming Siemens S7 1200 PLCs; if the candidate does not have this skillset, he or she will be expected to acquire this skillset in 6-12 months.
  • Python and C/C++/C# programming skills.
  • Working knowledge of Linux operating system; Experience in using Linux-based edge devices for a distributed sensor application is a plus.
