Shop Mechanic

Purpose of the Position:

Performs a variety of skilled mechanical and preventive maintenance and related work to ensure effective operation of all equipment within the company. Is able to work in a safe manner and complete tasks in a timely fashion.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

· Perform repairs on equipment and vehicles, including but not limited to, diesel and gasoline engines, electrical systems, air brakes, hydraulic brakes, hydraulic systems, automatic transmissions and clutches, suspension systems and computer control systems. Perform welding repairs and fabrication to various types of equipment.

· Perform engine tune-ups

· Repair/replace tires

· Record materials used and time spent on repairs

· Overhaul engines, both diesel and gasoline to required specifications

· Use shop tools and testing or diagnostic equipment safely and efficiently.

· Perform routine servicing and making minor repairs to vehicles and other equipment. Road testing vehicles after repair.

· Responsible for keeping equipment and work area clean and orderly and perform basic preventative maintenance functions on equipment as required.

· Fabricate, install and repair various mechanical devices.

· Use hand and power driven tools and equipment such as grinders, fender hammers, sanders, drill presses, lathes, testing and welding equipment, and other garage and mechanical shop tools and equipment.

· Safely use a welder and cutting torch.

· Other duties as assigned.

Education/Skills and Specifications:

· High School Degree (preferred).

· Must have or be able to obtain a CDL

· Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written reports.

· Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.

· Be able to effectively communicate with crew, contractors and Job Superintendent(s).

Qualifications:

· On-the job training is most ideal for the construction laborer but may have also completed a formal vocational program.

· Although no formal degree is required, adequate skills, willingness to work hard and effectively communicate is highly imperative
