Pay Rate: $70,000-$80,000 per year


Job Summary:
The Assistant Principal fulfills the mission of St. Therese Academy by working with the principal in the management of the school, faculty, staff, students and parent community, with an emphasis on curriculum and instruction, as well as student discipline. This position reports to, and is evaluated by, the St. Therese Academy principal.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school
  • As a witness to Gospel values, be willing to model the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Supports and adheres to our Code of Conduct, as well as the policies and procedures of the parish and school, and the Diocese of San Diego
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all school matters
  • Supports and assists with the responsibilities of the principal as directed (i.e. serve as liaison between the school and the Diocese of San Diego; responsible for the evaluation and support of teaching staff)
  • Serves as principal in the absence or direction of the principal
  • Carries out the disciplinary policies of the school, ensuring just application across all grade levels
  • Assists in the general administration of the school as directed
  • Supports the communication, training, and supervision of the faculty and staff
  • Advocates for, and enforces, school policies
  • Assists in planning for staff development, curriculum and its development; as well, assist in evaluating educational textbooks and materials, and student testing
  • Assists with designing the master schedule, junior high schedule, and part-time class schedule
  • Assists with faculty and other meetings as directed
  • Provides supervision of school-sponsored activities, including those which are extracurricular
  • Potential to teach minimally as needed; step in to substitute when needed.

Important Job Functions:

  • Collaborates with faculty and instructional aides to enhance the work environment and support instructional planning
  • Monitors students regarding tardiness, absences, and those on academic probation
  • Oversees faculty and staff committees as assigned
  • Visits classrooms on a regular basis to provide constructive feedback beyond a formal evaluation
  • Engages in instructional coaching for faculty to build on individual and school-wide professional goals
  • Is the first point of contact for faculty with minor behavioral issues of students; brings in principal when necessary on behavior
  • Supports the preparation of handbooks
  • Skill in managing, implementing, the appropriate technology for school instruction and parent communication, and be a facilitator in its use (e.g., training of staff)
  • Required to work some nights and weekends (Open House, Back to School Night, etc.)
  • Required to work a minimum of a full school day (typically 7:30am-3:30pm)
  • Required to work in standard office and school conditions
Requirements:

Religious Qualifications:

  • Active, practicing Roman Catholic (preferred)
  • Basic Catechetical Certification (preferred)
  • Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy

Professional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with Masters degree or pursuit of Masters degree preferred
  • Holds a current teaching credential, and has a minimum of three (3) years’ experience teaching in an elementary school
  • Communicates effectively with students, parents, and other professionals
  • Demonstrates professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits
  • Be able to pass a fingerprint background check with the State of California and Federal indices, as well as complete and maintain safe environment certification through the Diocese of San Diego (including additional certification as a mandated reporter, cf. – California Penal Code §§ 11165.7(a) and 11166), and satisfy the training requirement regarding sexual harassment required by law.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Knowledge of curriculum, instructional methods/strategies, and curriculum differentiation
  • Knowledge of child development, learning and behavior
  • Able to manage student behavior
  • Able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form
  • Able to work well with others in a school community
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Skill in critical thinking and planning
  • Demonstrates proficient use of technology, with ability to use and communicate with Google suite

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to remain in an office at a computer workstation and access information from a computer and use a telephone. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the office, as well as maneuver throughout the parish/school facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
