GDI is currently seeking a Cell Assembly Process Engineer to support battery production activities of pilot and R&D cell assembly lines by supervising, maintaining, and improving manufacturing equipment and methods.

Educational Requirements: Minimally BS in Engineering or MS in Physical Sciences with an emphasis on Energy Storage and/or Material Science preferred.

Battery Cell Assembly Process Engineer Duties:

  • Support commissioning, validation and use of cell assembly equipment for pouch and cylindrical cells. 
  • Understand cell failure modes arising from mechanical cell design. Lead cell failure and root cause analysis. 
  • Develop and review mechanical drawings and models with computer aided tools. 
  • Scale up cell prototypes from benchtop to pilot level increasing safety, quality and throughput. 
  • Work with the various electrochemistry groups to integrate 100% silicon anodes into new cell prototypes.
  • Conceptualize and develop new pouch and cylindrical cell manufacturing methods, designs and equipment to meet the needs of both internal  and external customers.
  • Drive and lead internal and external design reviews within the mechanical and structural analysis area and include your findings to create better products.
  • Prototype new battery cell formats.
  • Research and advise on purchasing of new pouch and cylindrical cell assembly equipment or modify existing equipment to prototype new battery cell formats.
  • Daily support for R&D cell assembly activities team, providing guidance and instruction to cell assembly and quality staff. 
  • Design and implement testing methods, establishing standards, and confirming manufacturing methods. 
  • Provide guidance and instruction to assembly and quality staff for all R&D cell assembly activities. 
  • Use data and reports to develop and implement continuous improvement plan for capability, cost, and efficiency of existing techniques and cell assembly equipment. 
  • Assist in adjusting / updating machine settings and parameters for various cell product lines.
  • Keep equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services, following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures. 
  • Plan, organize, direct and follow up on project related testing activities.

Location: Rochester, NY. Some travel may be required up to 20% (domestic and potentially internationally), depending on Covid restrictions and safety requirements. A valid driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle may be required. 

Compensation: Salary range is from $60,000 to $110,000 based upon relevant education and experience.
