Pump Shop Technician

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repairs/rebuilds all pumps to include wet end, wear ring replacements and clearance adjustments, bearings, mechanical seals, shaft replacements and motors as needed.
  • Assists with managing and maintaining the entire inventory of pumps and parts related to pump stations, grinder stations and treatment plants.
  • Works closely with the Pumps Supervisor and Maintenance Coordinators to track individual pumps within the pump station network and treatment plants within CMMS system to keep asset inventory up-to-date and accurate with work history, location, and attribution.
  • Performs electrical component troubleshooting and repair, including power and sensor cables, motor and bearing thermal and moisture sensors and connection blocks.
  • Rewires pumps for different supply voltages.
  • Repairs/rebuilds various Water/Wastewater equipment to include blowers, motors, mixers, etc.
  • Orders all parts and supplies for rebuilds/repairs, stock inventory, and manages vendor contacts.
  • Attends required training to keep current with changing pump design and repair techniques.
  • Coordinates daily work activities, organizes, prioritizes, assists with complex problems/tasks, and provides technical expertise.
  • Communicates with leadership and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review the status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Creates and completes work orders in the CMMS describing work completed, manpower utilized, materials, and equipment and establishes follow-up work orders as needed.
  • Maintains the parts washer, overhead crane and hydraulic press within safety standards.
  • Performs basic welding and fabrication duties, including mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum.
  • Utilizes and reads specialty tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, pyrometers, torque wrenches, multimeters, and megohmmeters).
  • Troubleshoot pumps and pump station appurtenances in the field as necessary.
  • Orders parts and supplies as needed.
  • Maintains all Pump Shop tools in safe working condition and keeps shop area neat and clean.
  • Administrative duties include the preparation or completion of various forms, reports, letters, e-mails, timesheets, inspections, etc.
  • Assists with Fleet duties and other related duties as required.
  • Assists in ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, procedures, and safety practices; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
  • Overall, this position anticipates the needs of the Engineering and field Services Manager and the Distribution/ Collections Department Heads before they arise and provides day-to-day solutions in a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment.
  • Performs general/clerical tasks, including making copies, sending/receiving faxes, scanning/distributing/filing documents, and processing incoming/outgoing mail.
  • Notarizes documents as needed; applies Commission seal to contracts or other official documents.
  • Distributes mail and packages to 1st floor staff (Field Services) daily.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • The position requires a high school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training and/or three (3) to five (5) years of previous experience in pump troubleshooting, repair/rebuilding and maintenance or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Position requires a mechanical/technical aptitude to effectively perform complex troubleshooting to determine and complete appropriate repairs.
  • Hydraulic, welding, CMMS and fleet experience are preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver’s License and a Wastewater Collection System license level “D.”
  • Forklift certified.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and customers.
  • Proficient with basic computer systems, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Skilled in oral, written, and electronic communication with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.

SALARY RANGE
$46,689 - $72,368
