POSITION SUMMARY

The Pre-ETS program provides pre-employment services to students in the Durham school system.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Develop a curriculum and provide pre–employment services to students with disabilities based on their needs and interests.
  • Lead classroom activities.
  • Provide job exploration counseling including vocational testing, community job shadowing, and self-advocacy training.
  • Provide classroom and individualized activities related to job exploration; job club; transitions after high school; job readiness, socialization, safety, travel training, self-help skills, functional academics, self-advocacy, and interview skills.
  • Support students in exploring postsecondary training options.
  • Lead job-related classes including self-advocacy/self-determination.
  • Participate in or conduct meetings with parents regarding transition or employment.
  • Assist with the recruitment of students within the school systems and enrollment into program services.
  • Maintain positive interactions with community agencies, schools, Vocational Rehabilitation, students, and parents.
  • Assure compliance with all applicable standards and maintain accurate and updated records ensuring appropriate documentation to show student progression thru the program and to allow for billing of services.
  • Attend plan meetings as needed.
  • Act as a positive role model at all times.
  • Participate in program evaluation and revise the program as required.
  • Collect, organize and analyze information about individuals through observation, interviews, and other sources to appraise interests and aptitudes for pre-vocational training.
  • Coordinate with sponsoring agencies to maximize the vocational potential of each individual receiving service.
  • Comply with all applicable rules, requests, and regulations of DECI, CARF, DMA, CMA, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and DMH/DD/SAS. Ensure standards for record keeping, access, vocational program design, and program implementation is met.
  • Represent the transition project to the public as needed.
  • Seek out accommodations and or assistive technology necessary to optimize vocational achievement.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Specialization Areas May Include Any Combination of the Following: Facility-based Vocational Services for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities, Pre-vocational/Enrichment Services or School Transition to Work


OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Make or suggest referrals to appropriate services and act as an advocate for individuals receiving services.
  • Provide limited transportation and assist students in making independent transportation arrangements.
  • Take an active role in area organizations to advance or promote the employment of people with disabilities.
  • Maintain certification in First Aid, CPR and North Carolina behavior intervention techniques.
  • Assist with persons with disabilities, including restraining in an emergency (if NCI-B certified).
  • Seek out no-cost or low-cost educational materials to remain current with industry practices and methodology.
  • Substitute for other Program Services Staff as requested.
  • Participate in DECI-sponsored training as assigned and assist with training new staff.
  • Regular attendance is required between the hours of 8:15am and 4:15pm, M-F.


Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Related four-year degree preferred; may substitute equivalent related work experience in a field such as social work, counseling, education, or vocational rehabilitation.
  • Three years of experience working with I/DD population and youth in transition-related services.
  • Experience working in a school environment is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills as demonstrated by past job performance. Ability to collect, organize and analyze information.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of all levels.
  • Good writing skills and proper use of grammar.
  • An understanding of basic behavior modification and task-training techniques.
  • An understanding of confidentiality and the rights of people with disabilities.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions independently, and plan and organize work.
  • Excellent organizational skills. Must be able to schedule and prioritize assignments and juggle multiple tasks. Must have initiative. Flexibility in work and thought is important.
  • Ability to become certified in behavior intervention techniques (NCI).
  • Fluency in the English language to facilitate communication with individuals with disabilities.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Computer Skills: Proficient with computers, working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS Training regarding individuals served and maintenance of company certifications/registrations is required. Additional training may include (but is not limited to) First Aid, CPR and Bloodborne Pathogens. See Training Requirements Form for a detailed list of training.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENT Some travel may be required.


WORK ENVIRONMENT Office and Classroom setting as well as warehouse environment. Position will have a start date of June 3rd, 2024.
