POSITION SUMMARY

The Junior Data Engineer will help manage and develop innovative solutions for USA for UNHCR's data warehouse and cloud infrastructure which support internal applications and data products that enable the organization to reach its strategic goals. They will develop and maintain data integrations with the organization's Salesforce CRM, and others enterprise systems supporting fundraising, advocacy, finance, and other teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build, and maintain scalable, efficient data pipelines for new data sources to support Business Intelligence and Analytics
  • Proactively improve existing pipelines to perform efficiently at scale
  • Aid in the orchestration of ETL/ELT pipelines
  • Develop custom data solutions as needed using scripting languages like Python, SQL, and Bash
  • Write efficient, clean, and well documented code for data pipelines, following best practices
  • Implement data quality checks and monitoring processes to ensure the integrity and reliability of data
  • Proactively identify and address data quality issues and performance bottlenecks
  • Collaborate with the fundraising, analytics, and business systems teams to support their data and automation needs (e.g to optimize online campaign performance, automate legacy data processes)
  • Use version control tools like Git to collaborate with other developers and engineers
  • Provide support and troubleshoot questions arising from integrations and system performance issues
  • Collaborate with the organization's data team to establish and maintain software engineering best practices wherever possible
  • Track and document work done and communicate progress with relevant users in a timely manner using tools such as Jira
  • Keep up to date with new technology developments that may be applicable to USA for UNHCR's infrastructure
QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • 3 years of related experience or equivalent experience, with 1 year of experience in data engineering; Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field e.g. computer science, statistics, applied math or related field preferred
  • In lieu of education/degree requirements a successful candidate will:

    • Understand the principles of data engineering to design, maintain and orchestrate data pipelines
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and Python
  • Experience with Git or similar version control tools
  • Some experience with data warehousing concepts like dimensional modeling, data marts, OLAP etc.
  • Familiarity with BI tools e.g. Tableau, Looker
  • Experience with Agile Development in the context of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and Frameworks such as Scrum and Kanban
  • Experience working with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders
  • Preferred experience with AWS Cloud; *nix; Docker; Orchestration tool experience i.e. Airflow, Dagster, Prefect etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical audiences
  • Ability to pick up new technologies and quickly grasp new concepts
  • Ability to work effectively in ambiguity
  • Demonstrated proactive behavior and has taken initiative to drive tasks forward
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with ability to evaluate and implement the most efficient and effective data engineering solution
  • Demonstrated passion for U4U's mission or other humanitarian causes


WORK LOCATION

Hybrid + Washington, DC + May also involve travel to some locations within the company's region of operations and select donor locations.

COMPENSATION

$88,361 - $95,471
