Job Description
The Staff Pharmacist is responsible for the overall operation, management and direction of St. John’s centralized pharmacy and decentralized dispensary model. The Staff Pharmacist reports to the Pharmacy Director (PD) and works closely with the Pharmacy Director (PD) and Clinic Director and other clinic managers where a dispensary or pharmacy exists. St. John’s has dispensaries in eight locations in Southern California serving 140,000 patient visits annually. Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

Qualifications/Licensure:

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited college of Pharmacy

Experience:

  • Five (5) years’ experience required dispensing, inventory control and managerial experience preferred
  • Experience with pharmacy management systems

Licensure/Certification:

  • Licensed Pharmacist in California
  • Note: Responsible for maintaining individual certifications as required by job function or by law and provide verification and recertification when requested by management.

Responsibilities

Pharmacy Operations

  • Serves a Pharmacist at all St. John’s dispensary/pharmacy locations;
  • Oversees and adjusts all workflows, space and systems needed to meet operational requirements;
  • Maintain prescription drug, biological, and non-prescription inventory at established levels;
  • Assists the maintenance of inventory practices;
  • Enters prescription drug orders into the pharmacy software systems;
  • Makes decisions regarding generic substitutions of prescribed pharmaceuticals;
  • Fills prescriptions per protocols;
  • Performs Quality Assurance on filled prescription orders;
  • Counsel patients on new prescription orders and provide information and educational materials when necessary;
  • May work closely with, Clinic Director, and Clinic Managers to create policies and systems to ensure drug storage locations have sufficient security to avert diversion.
  • Comply with the 340b Drug Pricing Program and HRSA Office of Pharmacy Affairs rules and regulations.

Clinical Pharmacy

  • Provides regular consultation for patients and staff regarding medications;
  • Participates in the development and maintaining of the drug formulary;
  • May works closely with, Clinic Director and Clinic managers to ensure information systems, tracking systems and reporting are accurate;
  • May actively participate as a member of the pharmacy committee and keeps updated on regulations, policies and new drugs for delivery of quality patient care ;
  • Participate in the development and implementation of clinical pharmacy programs.

Quality Management and Compliance

  • Ensures compliance with all regulations and guidance including but not limited to: Board of Pharmacy, Office of Pharmacy Affairs, CA Health and Safety Codes, California Business and Professional codes, Code of Federal Regulators, Unites States Code.
  • Ensures compliance with all contractual requirements of payers including but not limited to: Medi-Cal, Medicare, private insurance, and all federal and state and local government contracts
  • Ensures compliance with wholesale purchasing agreements and maintains close contact with vendors for ordering inventory and billing purposes.
  • Ensures all licensed pharmacy staff meet all licensure requirements including education and recertification.
  • Assures that all charges are accurately recorded and monitored
  • Duties as assigned

Monitors Essential Functions of Pharmacy Staff

  • Ensures that all fills, compounds, prescriptions as ordered by physicians comply with California law;
  • Makes sure all medications, vaccines are stored and preserved appropriately;
  • Checks incoming shipments of pharmacy supplies and medications and arranges for storage;
  • Removes and ensures legal disposition of outdated drugs from pharmacy and clinic stocks;
  • Provides drug information to clinic personnel and medical staff;
  • Participates in staff meetings, education programs, training programs for staff.
