Join our Head Start team! The Dual Language Education Coach works with site teams to support them in effectively developing culturally inclusive classroom environments using anti-bias curriculum and planning educational experiences for dual language children ages 0 to 5. The person in this position will model, consult, and provide guidance and resources to the classroom staffing the areas of classroom management, individualization, lesson planning, curriculum implementation, and support children learning in their home language as well as English language acquisition. The Dual Language Education Coach will coordinate language support and interpretation to ensure services to children and families are available in their home language, including assigning and proofreading work of regional translators.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); Bachelor's degree in Child Development or Early Childhood Education. Five years of experience working in preschool classrooms. Experience working with adults in a helping or teaching capacity preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION
  • Successful registration with the Office of Child Care Division's Central Background Registry.
  • Driver qualification status is required for this position. Must have valid Driver's License and insured vehicle available for use on the job. Satisfactory drive record for the previous three years.
  • Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability to obtain CLASS reliability certification.
  • Pre-employment physical examination.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Bilingual English/Spanish reading, writing, and speaking capabilities are required. *Bilingual pay differential available upon successful completion of bilingual assessment. The posted pay rate is inclusive of a 2% bilingual differential.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and related information technologies.
  • Utilizes effective communication skills with individuals and small and large groups.

Practice Based Coaching (35%)
  • Utilizes Practice Based Coaching strategies to develop routine system of observations, reflective coaching, and goal planning for assigned teaching staff.
  • Utilizes Monthly Environment Checklist as part of observation for monitoring classroom environments.
  • In consultation with the Education Manager, Education Specialist, and Regional Team Resource Specialists, provides mentoring, coaching, guidance and direction for Teachers, Early Head Start Teachers and Teacher Assistants in the performance of their responsibilities in the classroom and on home visits and conferences.
  • Attends monthly meetings with Education Manager and Coaches team.

Dual Language Education Component Support (40%)
  • Assists teaching teams to create developmentally appropriate and culturally inclusive learning environments, including setting up new classrooms.
  • Utilizes Planned Language Approach to provide coaching to teachers supporting dual language learners.
  • Provides classroom team with materials and visuals to support the needs of dual language learners.
  • Provides guidance and ensures instruction is provided in children's home language whenever possible and that appropriate bilingual and culturally inclusive materials are present.
  • Reviews lesson plans and daily classroom activities.
  • Ensures implementation of social emotional and anti-bias curriculum materials and resources for classroom staff.
  • Works with classroom team to provide assessment and conduct screenings of dual language children in the classroom and during home visits or conferences. Conducts screenings of children in their home language whenever possible.
  • Supports staff in determining classroom language model and provides guidance to teaching teams for dual language instruction.
  • Works with Education Manager and Inclusion & Support Specialist to support teaching teams in the implementation of support plans created for children.
  • Serves on Education Committee. Assists with research on recommendations as assigned.
  • Assist the Education Manager to ensure that all Performance Standards pertaining to Education and Early Childhood Development are met.
  • Works in partnership with all members of the Education Team to promote a comprehensive approach to education throughout the program.

Interpretation and Translation Support (15%)
  • Oversees the translation and interpretation needs of the program.
  • Coordinates with regional translators.
  • Contracts with external interpretation services. Creates connection between newly-enrolled family and the Family Educator to ensure appropriate language support for child and family.

Training, Professional Development and Presentations (10%)
  • Develops and provides training to teaching staff that includes information on anti-bias activities, dual language learning, and creating culturally inclusive environments.
  • Remains current in research-based instructional practices for language acquisition. Provides training to teaching staff to support children's language and literacy in their home language as well as English language acquisition.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

CONFIDENTIALITY Respects the confidentiality of information in regards to children and families enrolled in Head Start, agency staff, personnel issues and other program operations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Working with coworkers/clients over the phone and in-person.
  • Occasional remote work.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity for handling office equipment.
