Job Description

The Heavy Haul Driver will be responsible for transporting oversized and overweight loads. This employee will be responsible for safely loading, securing, and delivering freight to designated locations while adhering to transportation regulations and ensuring the integrity of the cargo.

Essential Job Functions

  • Inspect and prepare the heavy haul truck and trailer for loading, ensuring all equipment, tie-downs, and safety features are in proper working conditions.
  • Safely load and secure oversized and overweight cargo onto the trailer using chains, straps, binders, and other appropriate securing devices to prevent shifting or loss of cargo during transit.
  • Plan and map out transportation routes, consider factors such as load size, weight restrictions, road conditions, and required permits, to ensure safe and efficient travel to the destination.
  • Obtain necessary permits and authorizations for transporting oversized and overweight loads, including oversize load permits, special use permits, and state-specific permits, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and safety standards governing heavy haul transportation, including weight limits, height restrictions, and equipment requirements, to ensure safe operation and regulatory compliance.
  • Operate heavy haul trucks and trailers with precision and caution, maneuver through various road and weather conditions, navigate tight spaces, and maintain control of vehicle and cargo at all times.
  • Maintain open communication with dispatchers, shippers, receivers, and other stakeholders to provide updates on load status, delivery schedules, and any issues or delays encountered during transit.
  • Monitor and protect the integrity of the cargo throughout the transportation process, including checking for signs of damage, adjust load securement as needed, and report any incidents or concerns promptly.
  • Perform routine pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the heavy haul truck and trailer, check for mechanical defects, fluid levels, tire pressure, and other safety-related components, and report any maintenance issues for timely repairs.
  • Maintain accurate records of transportation activities, including trip logs, fuel receipts, delivery confirmations, and permit documentation, ensuring compliance with company polies and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, required.
  • Valid Class A CDL.
  • Prior experience as a heavy haul driver or similar role, preferably with experience hauling oversized or overweight loads and operating specialized equipment.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to safety protocols and regulations, with a clean driving record and a strong focus on accident prevention and risk management.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including lifting, bending, climbing, and sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Meticulous attention to detail in load securement, route planning, and vehicle maintenance, with a focus on ensuring the safety and integrity of the cargo and equipment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with dispatchers, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess situations quickly, identify potential risks or challenges, and implement effective solutions.
