CSA Ocean Sciences Inc. (CSA) is a marine science and technical services consulting firm that provides a broad range of environmental, coastal, and oceanographic services in the U.S. and internationally. We are seeking a Technician and suitably licensed vessel operator (100 GT USCG) ready to engage in a fast-paced, applied science role in the private sector. This person will be expected to support field and shoreside mobilizations, operations, and reporting. Applicants should have completed a college degree program in either marine-related sciences or a related field. This position will be based out of the Rhode Island.

Position Summary: The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of CSA projects including (but not limited to) field surveys, equipment maintenance, small boat operations, project support, occasional client interaction, contributing to research and reporting. An understanding of field sampling in the marine environment is required. The successful applicant must have strong organizational and teamwork skills. This position requires periodic domestic and potentially international travel, sometimes at short notice, during all times of the year, requiring both daytime and nighttime shifts if at sea, and potentially for prolonged periods (several weeks).

Responsibilities and Essential Functions: These include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintenance of USCG 100 GT Captain’s License
  • Operating vessels up to 100 GT
  • Directing and supporting vessel mobilization, demobilization, and maintenance
  • Operating survey and environmental sampling equipment including but not limited to winches, A-Frames, davits, etc.
  • Participation in nearshore and offshore sampling surveys, including non-core hours, weekends and potentially in international locations
  • Familiarity with coastal and marine environments in the NE US
  • Performing data entry and quality assurance
  • Adhering to all company standards and procedures
  • Satisfactory completion of assigned training and safety meetings as applicable.
  • Accepting other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in marine science, biology, ecology, or a related field
  • Vessel Navigation utilizing integrated geospatial systems (e.g., Hypack)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a close-knit team
  • Ability, availability, and responsiveness to enable work on multiple projects
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications, including especially MSWORD and EXCEL

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience supporting the development of sampling and survey plans and protocols
  • Logistics experience (i.e.: scheduling, tracking, shipping, etc.) of vessels and equipment
  • SCUBA open water certification
  • Existing safety and environmental hazard training
  • Understanding of data integration using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
