How much do marine science research jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for marine science research in the United States is $26.92, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.03 and $39.66 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges marine science researchers face when conducting fieldwork?

Marine science researchers often encounter unpredictable weather, challenging sea conditions, and logistical constraints while conducting fieldwork. Coordinating with vessels, securing research permits, and transporting sensitive equipment can require extensive planning and flexibility. Additionally, researchers must frequently adapt their methods due to changing environmental factors or limited access to specific study sites. Despite these challenges, fieldwork offers invaluable hands-on data and opportunities for collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Marine Science Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Marine Science Researcher, you need a solid background in marine biology, oceanography, or a related field, often supported by at least a bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with laboratory and field equipment, data analysis software (such as R or MATLAB), and sometimes scuba certification is important for conducting research. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help researchers interpret data, collaborate with teams, and present findings. These competencies are vital for producing accurate research, advancing scientific knowledge, and supporting marine conservation efforts.

What is the difference between Marine Science Research vs Marine Biology Technician?

AspectMarine Science ResearchMarine Biology Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Marine Science, Biology, or related field; often requires research experienceAssociate's or Bachelor's in Marine Biology or related field; technical training often sufficient
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, research vessels, field sites, universitiesMarine laboratories, aquariums, field sites, research facilities
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, government agencies, research institutionsZoos, aquariums, research centers, environmental organizations

Marine Science Research involves conducting advanced research, data analysis, and experimental design in marine environments, often requiring higher education and research experience. Marine Biology Technicians support research activities, perform technical tasks, and assist with fieldwork, typically with less formal education. Both roles are vital in marine science but differ in scope, responsibilities, and qualifications.

What is marine science research?

Marine science research is the study of the ocean and its ecosystems, including the organisms that live there, the physical and chemical properties of the sea, and the impact of human activities on marine environments. Researchers in this field investigate topics such as marine biology, oceanography, marine chemistry, and environmental conservation. The goal is to understand and protect marine resources, address issues like climate change and pollution, and inform sustainable use of ocean spaces.
