PURPOSE OF THE JOB :
The Maintenance Technician role at Sanford Federal, Inc. is crucial for supporting the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Complex in maintaining its infrastructure and facilities. This position involves a range of duties including fence repairs, general facility maintenance, maintenance mechanic operations, and upkeep of refuge facilities. The Maintenance Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and integrity of refuge lands and structures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fence Repair and Gate Installation: Assist FWS Staff and volunteers in repairing damaged segments of refuge boundary fences to prevent illegal entry of off-road vehicles, cattle, and horses into refuge lands. This includes working with barbed wire, digging, and installing metal and wooden posts in remote areas under extreme weather conditions.
  • General Facility Maintenance: Support FWS maintenance staff in various construction, rehabilitation, and preventive maintenance projects. Tasks may include concrete work, carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical work, as well as assisting with planting, vegetation control, and operation of agricultural equipment such as mowing equipment.
  • Maintenance Mechanic Operations: Assist with the general maintenance of vehicles, heavy equipment, fire engines, and mowing tractors. Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance of refuge fleet, and assist with welding, torch cutting, grinding, and general metal work needed for construction and installation projects.
  • Maintenance of Refuge Facilities: Aid in the maintenance of refuge grounds, trails, roads, and facilities. Tasks may include installing directional and information signs, as well as ensuring observation platforms, towers, bird observation blinds, and boardwalks are kept in good and safe conditions throughout the year.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid state driver's license.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle repairs, heavy equipment operation, welding, masonry work, and basic carpentry skills.
  • Fish and Wildlife Service certification to operate heavy equipment.
  • Safe use of workshop machinery such as table and hand saws, drills, chainsaws, band saws, and general carpentry tools.
  • Certification and willingness to respond to emergency situations such as fires or disasters.
  • Fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
