Purpose:

Under the administrative supervision of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of the University College, the Director of Career Services manages the university's Career Center as it works to assist all students, alumni, faculty, and employer clients in the development of career education, career identification, search of employment opportunities commensurate with formal academic pursuits. The director continually expands the client/user base and the scope of services possible to the broadest combination of academic and corporate clients in an effort to build relationships with the university, thereby expanding internship, career, and professional development opportunities for students and alumni.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Serves as the primary liaison between the university, its students and alumni, and potential employers on a state, regional, national, and international scale.
  • Responsible for fiscal planning and management for career services, including all operations and staffing matters.
  • Serves as adviser and interfaces with representative of industrial, governmental, and educational employers to assist in the most effective use of career services efforts. Also supports the marketing of other university, academic colleges, and departmental efforts related to professional and career development for students.
  • Develops new contacts with external organizations for the purpose of expanding employment opportunities for students and alumni.
  • Reviews and supervises the on-campus recruitment and interviewing processes as well as resume referral and job listing services for current students as well as alumni.
  • Coordinates and supervises staff's professional development activities and training, to include travel for professional development workshops, seminars, and conferences.
  • Closely coordinates communication with deans, department chairs, and other faculty to ensure that the career services department is meeting the needs and desires of the academic colleges and departments.
  • Consistently monitors, analyzes, and evaluates the current scope of services offered through career services.
  • Implements and directs new programs under the supervision of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education & Dean of the University College and in coordination with other directors of academic, student affairs, and engagement offices.
  • Seeks out opportunities to become a member of and serve in a leadership role in various professional organizations.
  • Provides career advising expertise to students and alumni regarding the job-search process, interviewing, resume, and letter writing, and all other facets of career planning.
  • Conducts workshops, seminars, and other presentations to students, faculty, employers, and alumni groups.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The ability to lead a team of career services professionals, coupled with the capability to develop a new and unique vision for the Office of Career Services.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education may relate to the development of students from a career services perspective.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs, human resources, workforce development, counseling, social work, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of combined university career services and/or corporate recruitment management experience required.
  • Thorough understanding of and commitment to the goals and responsibilities of the centralized career services concepts.
  • National professional contacts in both the university and employment sectors.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective organizational and management skills.
  • Demonstrated public relations/marketing abilities to be used to represent the university as a whole and career services specifically.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

  • Thorough knowledge of Adobe Suite and Proficient in using Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to manage and motivate a high-performing team.

Physical Demands:

  • Light sedentary office work.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekend work may be required.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
