Summary:
Assists Director of Construction & Facilities and Research Center personnel in maintenance of all systems on site. Performs and documents preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, inventory and storage of electrical equipment at the IBHS Research Center. Sets up instrumentation and electrical equipment for testing of buildings in the large test laboratory as well as specific instrumentation used in component testing in small laboratory facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Includes, but is not limited to the following:

Performs general electrical maintenance work for a seven building 90 acre facility by diagnosing electrical malfunctions to determine root cause failures and to perform preventative maintenance. Tasks typically involve:
  • Trouble shooting electrical circuits to test for continuity and function
  • Run conduit (above and below ground), pull cable and wire through conduits and terminate joints
  • Assemble instrumentation support structures and attach sensors
  • Troubleshoot equipment and data acquisition cabling and connections

Assists Instrumentation department by:
  • Laying out, building, testing, troubleshooting, repairing and modifying electronic components, parts, equipment, and systems for testing needs at the IBHS Research Center. Works with other Research Center Team members to perform system checks of new and existing equipment in structures to evaluate installed system performance.
  • Panel wiring skills are highly desirable. This includes both power and control wiring skills.

Plans, performs, documents, and records periodic electrical testing, and recommends or initiates modification or replacement of equipment which fails to meet acceptable operating standards. This may include, but is not limited to:
    • Operate man lift and forklift equipment.
    • Be able to work in heights up to 80’
    • Run conduit exposed or buried using all necessary tools and equipment
    • Pull, label, document, and record all necessary wire or cable
    • Make all necessary terminations

Assists with the construction of specimen testing equipment as required.
Assists with moving test specimens into and out of test laboratory as well as setup and removal of equipment and instrumentation used in tests.
Assists as needed with the conduct of tests in the laboratory.
Assists where needed that may be out of an electrician’s typical job duties by assisting/performing residential house type tasks (framing, roofing, drywalling, painting, etc.), metal working (cutting, assembling), and other facility support activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent
Experience: Certified electrician. Knowledge of PLC systems / controls, Allan Bradley Controls Software, Rockwell Automation System, and data systems would be an asset.

  • Assist in special projects as assigned.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills is essential
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret blueprints, drawings, and engineering sketches.
  • Ability to operate and maintain electrical equipment.
  • Ability to communicate easily with technicians and contractors through written correspondence and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
  • Willingness to be an integral part of a team that works in close coordination on building science research.
  • Ability to lead and direct other personnel on specific tasks.
