Starting Hourly Pay: $22.82

Job Description

The Indigenous Garden Educator works under the Indigenous Wellness Program and maintains NATIVE HEALTH community gardens with gardeners, volunteers and collaborating organizations. The Educator develops and implements ongoing garden volunteer schedules, garden events, community workshops for gardeners and the community. The Educator maintains community garden site, has direct oversight of garden row assignments and coordinates ongoing monthly interactive activities and garden work days.  The Indigenous Garden Educator works to implement and maintain the community garden project, which supports and fosters access to healthier foods in urban community setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Maintains community and traditional garden grounds.
  2. Organizes and promotes Community Garden spaces.
  3. Plans, designs, implements ongoing community garden workshops and interactive learning activities.
  4. Promotes NATIVE HEALTH’s (NH) mission and goals of the community and traditional gardens in all facets within the community, both internally and externally.
  5. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Preferred technical, associates, and/or bachelor degree or higher; with experience in public health, community health, and nutrition or related discipline appropriate to this position.    
  2. Experience working with the American Indian/Alaskan Native population.
  3. Possess a valid and unrestricted Arizona driver’s license (within 30 days of hire if applicant is from out-of-state) with no DUI/DWI or reckless driving convictions in the last five years. No more than two at-fault accidents in the last three years. Must maintain a valid AZ driver license during employment. Must be insurable by NATIVE HEALTH’s liability auto policy.
  4. Must pass a criminal background check with a Class I Fingerprint Clearance Card within the initial ninety (90) calendar days of employment.
  5. Must pass a substance abuse test upon employment and submit to random testing during employment.
  6. Must have an updated Immunization Record.
  7. Must have a current (within 12 months) Tuberculosis (TB) skin report upon employment and provide an update annually.
  8. Must obtain a CPR Card within ninety (90) days calendar days of employment and maintain a valid CPR card during employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of community garden, nutrition, and urban gardening.
  2. Knowledge on Arizona American Indian Tribes’ practices of farming, gardening, and traditional foods. 
  3. Must possess excellent communication skills (verbal, written, presentation, interpersonal) to deliver information and gain cooperation/trust from clients and community.
  4. Ability to effectively communicate, connect and collaborate with local, regional, and national organizations to achieve the primary goals and objectives of this program.
  5. Ability to efficiently manage time and multiple responsibilities. 
  6. Ability to document services provided as recommended utilizing best practices.
  7. Participates in staff meetings or other meetings as assigned by supervisor or Division Director.
  8. Maintains a strict code of conduct and confidentiality. Maintains professional standards.
  9. Knowledge of client confidentially and client rights according to Heath Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
