The Research Specialist contributes to the design and delivery of research projects and collaborates with researchers to develop, execute, and interpret research projects. Performs simple as well as complex laboratory and data collection and analysis techniques. This Research Specialist position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Roth, Department of Anesthesiology. Research projects in the lab examine rodent models of central retinal artery occlusion. In vitro studies use cell lines and primary cells prepared from rodents. Assays include mRNA isolation and qPCR analysis, biochemical assays to measure cell viability, Western blotting, cytokine assays, immunostaining of cells and tissue sections, quantitation of cell loss, and in vivo experiments on retinal function.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Isolation of RNA, real time PCR, treating rodents with drugs, and monitoring clinical signs.
- Preparation and immunostaining of retina and brain sections, Western blotting, cytokine assays, maintenance of cell lines.
- Perform in vitro studies in 6, 24, 96 or 384 well plate format, in vivo studies of retinal function.
- Conduct statistical analysis and present data.
- Other laboratory responsibilities include helping with ordering, stocking supplies, checking gas levels, general laboratory maintenance.)
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in science or related field required. Master’s degree in science preferred.
- A minimum of 1-2 years related research experience.
- Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices, and methods.
- Proficient in specific lab research techniques.
- Prior background in related research laboratory as a part-time student or full-time lab employee is preferred.
