Position Overview

The Special Education Teacher/Case Manager is responsible for ensuring that services and supports are in place for students with disabilities so that they can succeed in school. This role requires strong knowledge of special education practices, attention to detail and timelines, and strong collaboration with teachers, related service providers, and other staff. This job description is meant to provide structure to the responsibilities and accountability of this position.

Requirements:

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Develop and deliver specialized instruction in the classroom during academic periods designed to help students meet grade-level standards and achieve personal learning goals
  • Ensure IEP records are thorough, up-to-date, and well-organized, including communication logs, progress reports, and assessments
  • Assess student progress on IEP goals and use data to plan for instruction
  • Modify assessments and classwork for students in special populations
  • Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities (SWDs). IEPs should be developed in collaboration with general education teachers. Draft IEPs should be written in advance of scheduled IEP meetings and shared with the SEC 14 days prior to the scheduled meeting
  • Ensuring that services and accommodations are being provided as outlined in students’ IEPs by monitoring documentation, conducting classroom observations, and participating in regular consultation meetings with teaching teams
  • Ensuring teaching teams are knowledgeable about the needs of students. Developing and disseminating “IEPs at a glance” to teaching teams, upon student entry. Updating the “IEPs at a glance” regularly, as annual IEPs are updated
  • Analyzing progress monitoring data and providing feedback in an effort to improve service delivery and adequately document student progress
  • Collaborating with other school leaders to facilitate professional development training in special education for staff members
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required)
  • Master’s degree in special education (preferred)
  • Must have or be eligible for certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (Within one (1) year of employment)
  • Experience working with incarcerated or opportunity youth (preferred)
  • Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies

Site Description

The DC Jail is the adult correctional facility located in DC. Maya Angelou PCS Academy at DC Jail works with incarcerated men and women ages 18-22 who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The school is located on the Central Treatment Facility (CTF), however, it serves students on the Central Detention Facility (CDF) side as well.


Our mission is to provide a safe, nurturing, and mutually respectful environment that motivates and prepares each student to fulfill his academic or career potential. With the support of a wide circle of caring adults, students will develop the skills they need to make sound decisions and lead rewarding lives.
