Foundry: Melter

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Load and operate melting furnace.
• Tap molten metal into ladles to produce castings.
  • Ensure the correct weights are being tapped as per ticket/caster requirements and the temperatures are within acceptable ranges.
• Check/inspect the weights of the heats and the inoculants.
• Ensure correct carbon additions 15-20min before tapping to homogenize the heat made.
• Help pour the keel blocks as needed and check with the caster as required.
• Carry out gas tests when applicable.
• Adjust the heat when needed.
• Take a final on every other casting.
• Ensuring good slag-off and mixing practices are followed.
• Work to eliminate bad heat.
• Updating any deviations occurring w.r.t chemistry/temperature/delay time.
• Complete the information/calculations that need to be filled out on the heat sheet.
• Covering the furnaces at the end of the shift.
• Daily inspection checks of the furnace linings, controls, hydraulic system, and water.
• Keeping the equipment (L&N, Spectrometer) and the work areas clean.
• Maintains safe working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations; particularly relating to LOTO, hot work, and confined space entry.
• Assist fellow melters as needed.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• High School Diploma/GED
• Fork truck Certification
• Read & understand engineered drawings, sketches, schematics, and layouts.
• Demonstrate a consistent safe work attitude.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to perform tasks that may require bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing.
