Bellarmine College Preparatory, a Jesuit secondary school, has been educating young “men for and with others” in the tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, since 1851.

Bellarmine College Preparatory in San José, California invites applications for a Head Varsity Wrestling Coach who will serve as Head of Program for Bellarmine Wrestling. The Head Varsity Wrestling Coach will report to the Athletic Director and will be responsible for student-athlete growth within the athletic program as well as full program management, philosophy, and goal setting. Responsibilities:

As a Role Model

  • Supports Bellarmine’s mission and philosophy as it relates to the student athlete’s personal growth within Jesuit education.
    • Brings team to masses, models compassionate behavior towards athletes, leads team with dignity.
  • Develops a strong positive rapport with the Bellarmine community.
  • Establishes a program philosophy (values, skills, techniques) that will be shared with all levels of the program as well as students and families.
  • Creates an environment of fairness, commitment, and positive sportsmanship with all participants including parents, officials, and fans.

As an Educator

  • Consistently establishes clear expectations of the athletes.
  • Develop a program-wide system of play and vision that can be implemented throughout all levels.
  • Exhibits an extensive knowledge of wrestling, including but not limited to, strategy, adjustments, and practice design.
  • Employs a range of coaching strategies in order to meet the needs of all student athletes.
  • Develops a strategic, cohesive, comprehensive plan for each practice, game, and season.
    • e.g., conditioning, workout drills, and scouting

As a Manager

  • Communicates effectively with the student-athletes, parents, program staff and school administration.
    • e.g., schedules – game & transportation, rosters, student eligibility, and budget.
    • Collaborates with the Athletic Director to create practice schedules for all levels and establishes all non-league games and scrimmages for the program.
  • Creates a safe environment for athletes and coaches, including but not limited to, facility supervision, practice, competition, and locker rooms.
  • Develops and oversees the try-out process for all levels of competition.
  • Complies with West Coast Athletic League (WCAL), Central Coast Section (CCS), California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and Bellarmine rules, standards, and regulations.
  • Works cooperatively and responsibly with other program personnel (coaches, Athletic Directors, school Administrators).
  • Attends all required meetings related to the program (Bellarmine, WCAL, CCS, CIF).
  • Assists the Athletic Director in identifying and interviewing potential coaches for his/her program.
  • Other responsibilities as needed and requested by Athletic Director.

Minimum Qualifications/Skills:

  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • Ability to attend all team practices and games (Mon-Fri in afternoon/evening. Saturday commitments).
  • Experience playing and/or coaching competitive wrestling (high school, college, professional or combination).
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, and successfully interact with external and internal constituents.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff and students at all levels, displaying a positive attitude, demonstrating presence and self-confidence, and exhibiting motivation and drive.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience working with adolescents, and knowledge of adolescent development.
  • Working knowledge with Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to operate all other applicable software.
  • Self-directed with proven ability to assume responsibility, work independently, and creatively.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete tasks/assignments/projects/ within established time frames and with strong attention to detail, including the ability to stay focused and manage multiple projects/activities simultaneously.
  • Maintenance of a valid California driver’s license and acceptable driving record, in order to drive to and from off-site meetings, activities, and events; or the ability to use other means of transportation to attend such meetings, activities, and events.
  • Ability to perform the job safely with respect to others, property, and individual safety.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university.
  • Experience working in a Jesuit or Catholic school.
  • Head Coach experience at the high school or college level.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification and NFHS coaching certifications.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds, using proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and/or move around the applicable working environment as needed.
  • Ability to travel around our campus safely and comfortably.
  • Ability to use a keyboard (or an alternative input device) and other office equipment.
  • Ability to read information in printed material and/or on a mobile device/laptop/computer screen.

General Information:

  • Compensation: Stipend range of $6,000 - $9,000; Dependent on experience.
  • This is not a telecommuting position.
  • Work hours will vary and will include weekends and evenings.
