Salary Range:                                  $19.77 -$28.06 per hour/ DOE

 

Eagle Mountain City has consistently been one of the fastest growing cities in Utah during the last two decades and has a current population of approximately 42,000. The City is ranked 3rd in Utah for total land area and is now the 5th most populated city in Utah County. In addition to the fast-paced residential growth, Eagle Mountain has begun to see a recent increase in commercial permits, as well as increased interest and development of industrial buildings such as technology data centers and clean manufacturing/packaging. In coming years Eagle Mountain will see an infusion of jobs, retail development, offices, and continued residential growth, and building inspectors will continue to play a vital role in creating a safe community for all of the City's residents and employers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Building Inspection: Visits building sites or existing buildings to perform inspections including zoning, yard location, footing, foundation, framing, wiring, plumbing, ventilation, heating, and air conditioning to assure compliance to building codes and ordinances; interprets regulations and codes to builder and property owners to assist them in altering construction plans to meet established standards. Ensures proper recording and documentation of inspections and violations for records and references. Provides reports on construction of buildings.

Investigates alleged code violations and addresses minor complaints pertaining to construction and safety hazards; determines whether violations exist; and if so initiates proper departmental procedures to report the findings; prepares certification of the inspection. Works with the Neighborhood Improvement Officer to help enforce regulations and codes.

Operates personal computer and various software applications as needed to develop documents, charts, graphics, plan specifications and related materials. Takes photos of job sites and includes them in the building permit file. Prepares and issues certificates of occupancy.

Plans Examining: Receives and examines residential building and accessory building plans for compliance with international building codes as to construction, building type, occupancy, fire protection, and location of lot; verifies plans to conform to city ordinances (setbacks, public utility easements, proper drainage, etc.); makes corrections for errors on plans; discusses and explains ordinances and codes to concerned home owners and contractors.

Assesses and collects building permit fees following established procedures for building type and size; issues permits for building, plumbing, electrical, sewer, water, heating, cooling and other construction phases as required by law.

Performs related duties as required.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Building Inspector I:

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school and I.C.C. Residential Certified (in all four residential areas: plumbing, electrical, mechanical, building), or must obtain all four residential certifications within one year of employment date;

AND

  • Minimum two (2) years' experience in field inspections;

OR

  • Four (4) years of responsible experience performing above or construction related work;

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

 Building Inspector II:

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school and I.C.C. Residential Certified (in all four residential areas: plumbing, electrical, mechanical, building), and must obtain two (2) ICC Commercial Certifications within one year of employment date;

AND

  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in field inspections;

OR

  • Five (5) years of responsible experience performing above or construction related work;

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working knowledge of  construction methods and materials common to commercial, industrial and residential construction projects; basic engineering standards and codes;   political, legal and governmental processes affecting various building programs and project management;   building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and energy conservation codes; modern construction methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment; basic drafting techniques, blue prints and related specifications;  interpersonal communication skills. 

Skill in the art of diplomacy and cooperative problem solving.

Ability to interpret codes accurately and effectively;   analyze permanent structures to determine conformity with established codes; communicate effectively verbally and in writing;   read and interpret plans and specifications;   visualize completed projects in planning stages and estimate the end results;  estimate quantity of materials accurately;  perform advanced mathematical calculations;  develop and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, federal agencies, state agencies, local governments, subordinates, and the public.

SALARY RANGE:

$19.77-$28.06 per hour/ DOE
