STEAM Program Specialist

Full-time, $60,000-68,000 + full benefits

Location: SeaTac, WA (In Person)

About the Organization:

African Community Housing & Development (ACHD) is a culturally specific, community-founded organization led by visionary Black women and a community Board of Directors. ACHD works towards an informed African Diaspora immigrant and refugee community that is engaged in the holistic development of families, communities, and environment. ACHD focuses on equitable and culturally relevant health, legal, and educational services; housing stability and economic development; and land-use, real estate, and property development. Collectively, ACHD staff speak a dozen languages, and the majority identify as Black or People of Color.

About the Position:

The STEAM Program Specialist will work together closely with the Education Coordinator to create and teach vibrant, culturally relevant educational programs for African Diaspora youth. Our programs provide a unique, holistic approach to STEAM education that integrates SEL, outdoors, and academics to prepare students for the future that they will create—and the ideal STEAM Program Specialist is an educator who is ready to collaborate with their students through the learning process. This position will also require an educator who is comfortable in informal educational settings, particularly the outdoors, and is passionate about equity and justice.

Position Duties:

  • Design curriculum in partnership with Director of Education
  • Lead/teach education program classes and outreach events
  • Recruit guest speakers and visiting experts
  • Work closely with community partners to develop programming
  • Maintain and create teaching materials and tools
  • Perform outreach to engage families along with the outreach team
  • Complete program reports and provide artifacts as assigned by Education Programs Coordinator and/or Director of Education
  • Provide instructional assistance to Education Programs Coordinator
  • Manage own time, in collaboration with teammates, to ensure adequate coverage for all non-instructional tasks
  • Partner with Outdoor Program Specialist to ensure STEAM integration into outdoors lessons
  • Cultivate and steward partnerships and collaboration with partners, including the Museum of Flight, the University of Washington, etc.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years’ experience as a lead teacher
  • Comfortable in both informal and outdoor education settings
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to design and teach interdisciplinary, standards-aligned curriculum for elementary and middle-school ages
  • Strong verbal communication and writing skills
  • Experience applying differentiated classroom and behavior management techniques
  • Competence in creating safe, culturally relevant, anti-racist, and age-appropriate social-emotional learning teaching spaces
  • Experience working respectfully with diverse communities, including non-English speakers
  • Enthusiasm for SEL and STEAM education, and knowledge of NGSS curriculum design
  • Regular weekday evening availability, and occasional weekend field trip availability
  • Valid WA state driver’s license
  • National background check and verification of COVID vaccination

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education/curriculum/instruction or a related STEAM field of study
  • Fluency in an African language, especially Somali, Amharic, Tigrinya, or Swahili
  • CPR and First Aid certified
  • Current WA state teaching certification
  • Comfortable teaching in an outdoor context
  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest ecosystems, local flora/fauna, outdoor recreation, and natural history of the area
  • Experience working with a wide variety of ages
