Job Title: R&D Machinist V

Department: R&D Valves

Reports to: Head of Global Product Group Valves

Location: Nor-Cal Products, Inc. dba Pfeiffer Vacuum Valves & Engineering (Pfeiffer Vacuum V&E)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt


SUMMARY

Responsible for ensuring that new product development projects meet machining standards and engineering specifications. Generally, is capable of working with complex prints, geometrics, tolerancing; very highest skill level and setup experience; also capable of running all machining equipment (CNC and manual) with no direct supervision.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Duties

      1. Directly conducts machining of company prototype and first article components; plus special machining assignments of extremely high level, complex nature, which may require machining to hand-sketches and verbal instructions (final component or components will require transition into formal drawings).
      2. Work with the engineering department to establish specifications, finalize drawings and manufacturing routings for ECO release, based upon customer, product managers or engineering specifications. May also work with other departments to resolve manufacturing problems; plus the completion of documentation
      3. Assist other departments in achieving company manufacturing goals. May assist in design reliability testing, which could include building of test fixtures and operation of various test equipment. Also, may assist in the assembly of integrated systems.
      4. Will work with Quality Assurance, Manufacturing Engineering, Production Control, etc. in order to determine proper sequencing, procedures and priorities.
      5. Will work for other departments when necessary.

100% machining/shop floor environment; routine lifting to 50 pounds, and occasional lifting up to 100 pounds with assistance. Required to wear protective equipment, e g, eye and hearing protection as required, etc.

Tasks require walking, sitting, bending, reaching, mobility, frequent lifting and pushing/pulling. Work requires computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, and data-entry), attention to detail and accuracy. Communication skills including listening and speaking are required for interaction with other employees, vendors, and customers. Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to balance multiple tasks and any stress associated with the duties and responsibilities of this position are essential requirements in the performance of this job.

Secondary duties with added requirements may be assigned from time to time.

General Qualifications


  1. Able to read, understand and machine from complex prints, and/or hand-sketches and verbal instructions.
  2. Knows how to operate machining equipment in a safe manner.
  3. Able to test, and verify conformance to standards, using specific testing, measurement tools and equipment, and/or by visual examination.
  4. Able to work in a fast-paced shop, with quickly changing work priorities, and with minimal interaction to complete assignments on time.

Education and/or Experience

Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to graduation from high school (plus some post high school technical training) or that would provide the required machining knowledge, skills and abilities of this job.

Minimum 60 months of general machining experience; plus 36 months specific vacuum machining of stainless steel chamber or vacuum components; plus 18 months of complex specialty prototype machining.

Language Skills

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Mathematical Skills

Excellent mathematics skills.

Reasoning Ability

Able to work in a fast-paced shop, with quickly changing work priorities, and with minimal interaction to complete assignments on time.

This position requires work in factory setting.
