Solar Project Development Engineer/Electrical

Buffalo Solar is looking for a Solar Project Development Engineer, with an Electrical Engineering background, to provide strategic, technical, operational, and financial leadership for successful implementation of all of its commercial solar project activities. This role will offer support and subject matter expertise for solar project development for behind the meter EPC and PPA projects

Site Selection and Feasibility Support Provide recommendations and identifying schedule and risks in support of project development and due diligence evaluation reporting to the Director of Construction on the technical feasibility of individual sites contemplated for new development projects, for generating facility sites
as well as sites for interconnection facilities;
Technology Assessments Conduct technical assessments of different OEMs (both related to solar and storage) and provide recommendations to the Construction Executives on the type of technologies to use forthe project;
Development of Production Models Work with OEMs and Owners Engineers to develop performance for use in the interconnection process, RFP proposals, permitting and the financial model, using Helioscope and internal modeling platform;
Interconnection Process Develop the technical inputs, single line diagram and site plan, in support of a projects initial Interconnection;
Infrastructure Requirements Evaluation Work closely with the Construction Executives to determine all feasible options for required project infrastructure, including electrical interconnection, telecommunications, civil, water wells or pipelines, and road/access improvements;
Development of Site Drawings Manage the development (along with the Owners Engineer) all site and
interconnection layouts, grading plans, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans, elevations and other drawings
necessary for project development and permitting;
Permit Support Provide technical support to the Project Manager for all relevant project permits. Track technical permit obligation compliance for technical/construction obligations required pre- and post-financial close;
Management of Consultants Manage the activities of the Owners Engineer and other technical consultants providing support to the project and timelines
Project Finance Assist in the development of technical inputs to the project financial model, including production estimates, EPC capital costs, operating and maintenance expenses, and operational capital expenditures. Effectively structure finance models for PPAs considering net metering, incentives and grants.
Relationship Management Develop and maintain relationships with utility companies, governmental entities, and corporate clients to understand their energy needs and preferences. Collaborate with internal teams including project development, finance, legal, and engineering to tailor PPA offerings to meet client
requirements;
Negotiation and Contract Management Lead negotiations with off-takers to secure favorable terms for PPAs, including pricing, contract duration, and renewable energy certificate (REC) arrangements. Coordinate with legal counsel to draft, review, and finalize PPA agreements, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
and organizational standards;
Risk Management and Compliance Evaluate risks associated with PPA agreements and develop strategies to mitigate risks effectively. Stay updated on regulatory changes, market dynamics, and industry best practices
related to renewable energy PPAs to ensure compliance and maximize opportunities.
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (or associated discipline) from accredited university;
Masters Degree in Power Systems and Protection or similar area of focus is a plus but not
required.
Professional Engineering license is a plus but not required.
Strong knowledge of industry standard design codes such as National Electric Code, International BuildingCode, International Fire Code, AHJs, and other industry standards;
Proven experience in origination, business development, or sales roles within the renewable energy industry,
with a focus on behind the meter, Commercial Solar projects and PPAs;
Strong understanding of renewable energy markets, including knowledge of regulatory frameworks, incentive
programs (REAP, NYSERDA), and market dynamics;
Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain
relationships with diverse stakeholders;
Proficiency in financial analysis, contract negotiation, and project management;
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Solar Production Modeling (PVsyst or similar) and other technical software.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook and proven ability to learn new software programs;
