Senior Software Engineer - Infrastructure

We are hiring a Senior Infrastructure Software Engineer to contribute to our rapid product development pace. 

We are stewards of AppFolio’s most critical Foundation Services, ensuring they will safely support the growth and business success of AppFolio and our customers. These microservices are fundamental building blocks used by many teams at different levels of generalization and across multiple domains, providing solutions to vertical-agnostic problems.

What You’ll Do

Interface directly with Product Development teams, security, quality assurance, and web operations in all verticals, and with Business Systems, advising, empowering, and helping them create reusable components that become AppFolio’s competitive advantage.

Directly and indirectly support AppFolio’s customers and their business success, by ensuring our systems are available, scalable, secure, and reliable.

Formulate, implement, and evaluate algorithms and database queries to support SaaS scalability and stability.

Use automation, test-driven development, code reviews, continuous integration, and continuous deployment to deliver high-quality software, and rapidly fix bugs as they come up.

Work closely with, and incorporate feedback from other engineering team members, QA, and product owners

Leverage agile practices in start-up mode, encourage collaboration, prioritization, and urgency to develop at a rapid pace

Research, share, recommend and master new technologies and trends

Must-Haves

• Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related technical discipline
• Comfortable delving into cloud infrastructure as well as Ruby on Rails code
• Basic knowledge around distributed systems
• Experience with production applications and infrastructure including troubleshooting
• Experience supporting product and infrastructure teams
• Familiar with synchronous and asynchronous scaling patterns
• Familiar with runtime instrumentation and monitoring, logging, alerting/alarms
• You love learning about new technologies, but understand the value of continuing to use existing technologies if it still does everything you need it to do
• You care about the long-term maintainability of the codebase and will learn to advocate for refactoring and clean-ups where appropriate
• You care about work-life balance and want your company to care about it too; you'll put in the extra hour when needed but won't let it become a habit
• You’re creative, and can solve complex problems without a roadmap
• You’re able to make calm and quick decisions when something's on fire
• You openly share information and learn from others
• 3+ years of relevant industry experience

Nice-To-Haves

• Experience with AWS and GCP cloud
• Experience with specific AWS services: Lambda, EC2, EKS, IAM, S3, SQS, Dynamo, RDS
• Familiarity with scripting languages: Ruby, Python
• Familiarity with cloud frameworks, orchestration, and tools: CloudFormation, Terraform, Kubernetes, Ansible, Helm
• Familiarity with cloud system and application architecture and design
