Cancer Center - Advanced Nurse Practitioner (APP) (APN)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Independently and in collaboration with Oncology physicians, the nurse practitioner provides health care to the clinic population, acute and critical care setting and assumes direct responsibility for health care of the oncology patients.  In collaboration with the attending physician and the clinic leadership, the APN helps direct the oversight of the development and the management of the clinic programs.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master of Science, Nursing
  • Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant, state of Nevada
  • DEA license
  • BLS
  • American Nurses Association credentialing certification
  • Ability to communicate with employees, physicians, patients and administrative staff in a courteous and professional manner.


POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Patient Care

  • Help set and maintain the clinical quality standards.
  • Work effectively with all outpatient services to see that our operations integrate effectively. Must have the ability to understand organizations, how they interact, and a thorough understanding of all clinical providers within the hospital structures. 
  •  Demonstrate effective communication skills and be able to effectively work with other community care providers and CVMC staff.
  • Participate in the growth and development of the practice.
  • Work under specific clinical protocols for infusion services including research infusion protocols. 


Essential Functions

Nurse practitioners are health care providers who practice in ambulatory, acute, emergency room and critical care. According to their practice specialty, these primary care providers provide nursing and medical services to individuals, families, and groups by diagnosing and managing cancer patients.

The incumbent must provide optimal patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of adult and geriatric patients, as applicable. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based upon physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to the age of the patient served. A nurse practitioner performs the following acts in addition to the ordinary functions of the registered nurse if he/she is properly prepared and acts are currently within the standard of medical practice for his/her specialty and appear in their protocols: 

  1. Systemically access the health status of persons and families by:

a. Taking, recording, and interpreting medical histories and performing physical    examinations.

b. Performing or initiating selected diagnostic procedures.

 2.  Based on information obtained in the assessment of a person’s health, manage the care and monitoring of persons diagnosed with cancer. Management may include:

a. Initiation of a program of treatment for the patient, in conjunction with the supervising physician.

b. Evaluation of responses to health problems and programs of treatment.

c. Informing a person or family of the status of the patient’s health and alternatives for care.

d. Evaluation of compliance with a program of treatment agreed upon by the person or family  and the nurse practitioner.

e. Modification of programs of treatment based on the response of the person or family to treatment.

f. Referral to appropriate providers of health care.

g. Commencement of care is required to stabilize a patient’s condition in an emergency until a physician can be consulted.


Medical Records

  • Reviews medical reports including but not limited to laboratory reports, imagining studies, and medical records.
  • Completes a medical record for each patient seen in the Clinic.

 

Communication/Protocols

  • Communicates with employers, insurance company representatives, and other health care providers concerning patients care issues.
  • Writes protocols defining management of patient care in Clinics.
  • Follows all HIPAA regulations at all times.
