Job Description

Overview: We are seeking a highly experienced Roadway Design Engineer to join our team at an engineering firm supporting municipalities and private clients in the Chicago area. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience as a Design Engineer in municipal engineering, with a focus on roadway improvements. The Roadway Design Engineer must hold a Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification (preferred) and have a demonstrated track record of active participation in federally funded projects, including the submission of Professional Development Reports. The candidate should be proficient in completing IDOT Form BLR 22210 and accompanying forms, with a deep understanding of IDOT guidelines, regulations, and processes related to roadway design, safety, environmental surveys, complete streets, public involvement, and right-of-way acquisition.

Responsibilities:

  1. Roadway Design: Lead and participate in the design and engineering of roadway improvement projects, including street resurfacing, widening, reconstruction, and intersection improvements. Develop and review design plans, specifications, and cost estimates to ensure compliance with project requirements and regulatory standards.
  2. IDOT Compliance: Ensure compliance with IDOT guidelines, regulations, and processes throughout the project lifecycle. Complete IDOT Form BLR 22210 and accompanying forms accurately and in a timely manner. Familiarity with 3R Design Guidelines, BLRS 27-7 (Variances), BLR22120, BLRS Chapter 41, and other relevant IDOT standards is essential.
  3. Crash Data Analysis: Analyze crash data and traffic patterns to identify potential safety hazards and design improvements. Evaluate how past activity may affect future design decisions and propose appropriate mitigation measures to enhance roadway safety for all users.
  4. Environmental and Right-of-Way (ROW) Processes: Understand and navigate IDOT's environmental survey process and ROW acquisition process. Coordinate with environmental consultants, surveyors, and legal teams to address environmental concerns and acquire necessary land rights for project implementation.
  5. Complete Streets and Public Involvement: Ensure that project designs comply with IDOT's Complete Streets requirements and public involvement guidelines. Lead or assist with public meetings, hearings, and outreach activities to engage stakeholders, address concerns, and solicit feedback on project designs and impacts.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field required.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification preferred.
  • 5-10 years of experience as a Design Engineer in the municipal engineering field.
  • Demonstrated active participation in the submittal of Professional Development Reports for federally funded projects.
  • Proficiency in completing IDOT Form BLR 22210 and accompanying forms.
  • Strong understanding of IDOT guidelines, regulations, and processes related to roadway design, safety, environmental surveys, complete streets, public involvement, and right-of-way acquisition.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
