Music Instructor

Teach private and/or group classes to predominantly amateur musicians. Most classes are taught live on-campus, and some are taught off-campus. A very, very small percentage of classes are taught remotely, at the student’s request.

Job Atmosphere

The Half Note Music School instructors provide weekly instruction to a diverse student body. Our students range in age from 3 to seniors, from total beginners to a few long-term students capable of a professionally designation. Most fall in between that talent range. We estimate that no fewer than 5 languages are spoken in the homes of our musical family. We are mindful of the specific strengths of our faculty, and we strive to match each teacher with their ideal students. However, the student/teacher pairing is ultimately a management decision.

Roles and Responsibilities:

· Arrive for the work shift on time and alert with a neat, professional appearance.

· Teach students the level-appropriate essential elements of music, including repertoire of their choosing, music theory and regular ear-training exercises.

· Log lesson notes (Home assignment) during the class. ‘Click’ send after the class. *

· Communicate regularly with the student (or parents) on student progress, including specific recommendations to accelerate student progress.

· Reply to all communication from the school office, colleagues, and students, expeditiously.

*Teachers may optionally log and send lesson notes after class, but the hourly pay is limited to the scheduled class time. In either case, all lesson notes are required to be sent by the end of the day.

Skill Requirements:

· Private music teaching experience

· The ability to ‘show and tell’ for students modeling exemplary technique.

· Knowledge of music theory

· Ability to read music at an intermediate level*

· Exude energy, enthusiasm, patience, and a positive demeanor.

· Reinforce good practice habits with positive, complimentary words.

*Not all, but most assignments require reading.

The ideal candidate for these positions is someone interested in investing the time to build a good, sustainable teaching practice. We do not require a specific number of scholastic accomplishments, nor our students generally tend to stay with us for a very long time.  They are loyal, have formed relationships, including music partnerships. Special consideration will be given to applicants able to teach multiple instruments, especially piano.
