FULL-TIME/PERMANENT

MAINTENANCE MECHANIC 2
 WDFW CAMP Program
 
Yakima, Washington - Yakima County 

Are you skilled at shop fabrication of metal products? 

Join our team in Yakima, Washington, to perform maintenance and repair of screen structures, and the rigging and signaling for the removal and installation of fish screens, existing gantries, trash racks, and other associated needs of specific screen sites. 

This position will operate heavy equipment to maintain and repair WDFW access sites, serving the mission of the department by delivering technical and professional engineering, construction, and maintenance to sustain facilities, infrastructure, and ecosystems.

Duties

Our Maintenance Mechanic,  

Performs welding and fabrication. Tasks include:  

  • Participates in all phases of shop fabrication and field installations.
  • Uses hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations or seams of fabricated metal products.
  • Generates cut lists, fabricates and assembles the work using Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), Metal Inert Gas (MIG) or Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) welding processes.
  • Operates acetylene, SMAW and MIG welding equipment (portable or otherwise) in cutting and welding.
  • Operates a variety of shop fabrication equipment such as oxyacetylene and arc welders, hand or electric pipe threaders, grinding wheels, buffers and drill presses.
  • Cuts, welds, brazes and solders metal parts in the repair and replacement of parts for mechanical equipment, or in repair, replacement or installation.
  • Follows blueprints in doing structural or major mechanical repair work.
  • Overhauls, repairs or replaces metal parts where welding or associated metal work is the major skill required.
  • Aligns, sets in place and welds bases for motors, pumps and other mechanical equipment.
  • Fashions, repairs, or replaces tools and equipment.
  • Assists in the dismantling of worn machinery and equipment and assists in the installation of new machinery and equipment.

Operates heavy equipment. Tasks include: 

  • Operates heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life.
  • Operates related equipment to move dirt, rock, equipment, materials, and clear land, dig ditches, remove debris and build roadbeds.
  • Performs daily safety and maintenance checks.
  • Cleans heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required.
  • Ensures heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
  • Maintains and assists with repair of heavy equipment, trucks and trailers.

Conducts facilities maintenance. Tasks include: 

  • Inspects, repairs, and maintains structures and buildings.
  • Repairs or installs new plumbing, siding, windows, paint and fixtures.
  • Installs or repairs concrete raceways and ponds at hatchery facilities.
  • Removes or dredges silt from retention ponds at hatcheries.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:   
    1. Work occurs in all weather conditions, and in rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes. Repetitive bending, stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling, and lifting fifty lbs. when loading trucks or moving materials is required. 
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically work is 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Monday - Thursday. Occasional eight-day work weeks including weekends, and overtime as needed. 
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. During construction season, travel will be required up to seven (7) consecutive nights at a time. 
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Hand tools, chain saws, drills, grinders, welders, oxy-acetylene torch, pumps, cranes, manual/portable chain hoists, dump truck, backhoe and excavator.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 

AND

  • Four (4) years of experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic or welding trade. 

Experience: 

  • Maintaining records regarding material, equipment, and repairs.
  • Working from sketches, drawings and blueprints.
  • Maintaining and using tools and equipment to include the use of measuring instruments.
  • Using power tools and equipment such as hand tools, chain saws, drills, grinders, welders, oxy-acetylene torch, pumps, cranes, manual/portable chain hoists.
  • Interpreting instructions and specifications. 
  • Using personal computers and Microsoft Office.

Knowledge of: 

  • Accepted practices, processes, materials, and tools of the welding trades.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the welding trades.
  • Equipment assembly, installation, repairs, etc.

Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver's License. 
  • Class A CDL License (can be obtained within 12 months of hire). 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • First Aid/CPR certification. 
  • AutoCAD experience. 
  • Two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment such as excavator, backhoe, or dump truck. 
  • Valid Washington Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner's Certificate.
