Full-Time

This is unskilled manual labor performing a variety of construction and maintenance or refuse collection activities depending on assignment. Work is performed under the immediate direction of an employee of a higher classification. Many tasks are routine and once learned can be performed without difficulty under general supervision.

Assists in performing a variety of manual labor tasks. Assists in performing unskilled refuse/collection or repair/maintenance work. Tasks depend on department and may include, but are not limited to, the following: working on patch/shoulder road crews; installing signs; pouring concrete; planting trees, shrubs, and flowers; clearing brush and refuse from work site; cleaning drainage structures; solid waste collection; general median and right-of-way maintenance.
Litter Control: Collect litter along highways and medians assist in collection of solid waste/recycling on an as needed basis.
Operates simple machinery. Uses maintenance and/or construction tools. Cleans equipment and machinery.
Loads and unloads packages, equipment, and materials including stone, gravel, branches, dirt and asphalt.
Loads and unloads refuse containers and/or miscellaneous items as assigned.
Set flags/barricades to stop/direct traffic at work site.
Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Knowledge of applicable hazards and safety precautions. Knowledge of tools used in the maintenance and construction work. Willingness to perform routine unskilled manual work and ability to lift heavy articles. Ability to follow oral instructions.

Some experience in designated field, i.e., lawn maintenance, repair work, pouring concrete, solid waste, refuse or recycling collections, etc. Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual labor.

Possession of a valid Florida Driver's license. Depending on assignment: ability to obtain Intermediate Level MOT Certification within 1yr of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual labor and work long hours outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions. Ability to read printed material, speak and hear sounds. Depending on position/assignment: Ability to operate a vehicle on a daily basis. Ability to utilize basic hand tools; shop tools such as power saws; grinders, etc.; lawn maintenance equipment; and safety equipment frequently. Ability to climb stairs and ladders frequently. Ability to enter confined spaces such as well pits, valve pits, tanks, and storm water pipes, frequently. Ability to enter and work in shallow depth underground confined space, i.e., large water meter vault, etc. on a daily basis to perform required maintenance. Ability to stoop, climb, crawl and lift and carry up to 50 pounds for distances of up to 50 feet daily.

This is a daily requirement:
Must have adequate physical stamina and agility to walk on uneven terrain and to collect/hand carry bulky items into unimproved areas under construction, including wet trenches, during pipeline installation and maintenance.

Ability to enter and work in shallow uncovered underground confined space, i.e., large water meter vault, etc. on a daily basis to perform required maintenance. Must possess adequate sight and hearing sensory capabilities to see and hear orders and directions in regard to safety task operations in the presence of moderate background noise.
