Ophthalmic Assistant Job Summary

We are looking for a highly motivated, compassionate, and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Assistant who will work alongside our Ophthalmologists in providing patient care, helping to ensure that all patients receive the highest quality of healthcare. This individual will be responsible for greeting patients, scheduling appointments, and collecting patient data. In addition, the Ophthalmic Assistant will provide assistance with patient exams, administer diagnostic tests, and provide patient education.

Ophthalmic Assistant Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greet and register patients, verify patient demographics, and collect copays
  • Schedule patient appointments and answer patient inquiries
  • Administer diagnostic tests and document patient information, as necessary
  • Assist with patient exams, including preparing and cleaning exam rooms, as needed
  • Obtain and record vital signs, as necessary
  • Perform eye measurements, including pupil dilation and tonometry
  • Provide patient education on ophthalmic conditions, treatments, and medications
  • Prepare and label medications, as necessary
  • Maintain patient records in accordance with HIPAA regulations
  • Follow all safety protocols, including proper sterilization and disposal of medical supplies

Ophthalmic Assistant Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited ophthalmic assistant program preferred
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Able to multitask and prioritize
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Able to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds
